Honda City was launched in India for the first time in 1998. It has been 23 years since the first version launched in India, still it continues to be the most popular sedan in India. Honda City has always been a benchmark sedan.

In 2021 Honda launched the 5th generation Honda City in India and was planning to bring the Hybrid version by the end of 2021. considering the popularity of the sedan and with petrol price hitting 3 digit figures, Honda desperately wanted to launch the Honda City hybrid in India as early as possible. But due to the pandemic, the testing and development got delayed.

According to the latest news, Honda India is planning to unveil Honda City Hybrid in India on April 2022.

This delay has helped Honda to fine-tune the car to suit Indian customer needs. Honda City Hybrid will be India’s first hybrid car under Rs 20 lakh. It uses intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid powertrain. The car is already on sale in Malaysia and Thailand. It looks like the 5th generation Honda City that is currently on sale in India except for few cosmetic changes like the black front grill.

It will have features like auto climate control, electronically adjustable seats, six airbags, a rearview camera, crash sensors, ABS and EBD and an engine immobilizer.

Honda City Hybrid will come with a fuel-efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine with a power output of 97bhp and 127Nm of torque. Unlike other cars, this hybrid car will use 2 electric motors. One motor will be used as an integrated starter-generator, the other one produces 105 bhp and 253Nm torque. Though it makes a combined power of 203bhp, it will be tuned to be more fuel-efficiency. 2021 Honda City hybrid launched in other markets does 0-100 kmph in 9.5 seconds. The performance is not expected to be much different in India.

This hybrid system will help in having 3 modes, which will keep on switching according to the circumstances automatically.

EV Drive

This is when the combustion engine is turned off and the car runs solely on electric power. This usually happens in urban driving conditions. It does not mean that the car always runs in full electric mode at low speeds. It will keep on changing between modes automatically to provide the most fuel-efficient drive. This change in modes will not be noticeable for the driver.

At speed between 0 to 40 kmph. More than 80% of the time the car will run in EV mode.

Hybrid Drive

In the hybrid drive both the engine and electric motor work simultaneously to run the car. This mode is activated more often at speeds above 40kmph.

At speeds between 40kmph and 80 kmph, more than 50% of the time the car runs in EV mode, around 30% of the time in hybrid mode and the rest of the time in Engine mode.

Engine Drive

In this mode, the car will run solely on the combustion engine.

This happens mostly at speeds between 80kmph and 120kmph. In this speed range, the car runs in Engine mode for more than 70% of the time.

At speeds above 120kmph, the car will run in full hybrid mode.

In India, the car is expected to be launched with 6-speed manual gearbox and automatic options.

Honda City i-MMD is already in sale in Malaysia and Thailand. The car is claimed to have a fuel efficiency of 27.8 kmpl.

Honda City hybrid will be around 2-2.5 lakhs more expensive than the petrol model currently sold in India. Honda is targeting to sell around 300 hybrid cars a month.
