Unveiled as the latest masterpiece in the Ferrari One-Off series, the Ferrari SP48 Unica, a two-seater Berlinetta based on the F8 Tributo platform, was created by the Ferrari Styling Centre headed by Ferrari's global chief designer Flavio Manzoni.

A central feature at the design level of this unique new car is the extensive use of procedural parametric modeling techniques and 3D prototyping (additive manufacturing technology). Based on this, Ferrari's team of designers and engineers was able to redesign the front grille and engine air intakes. This advanced manufacturing process helped the team to design a more seamless 3D grille that flows seamlessly and naturally with the other surrounding components, giving it an overall visual aesthetic.

The bodywork also uses a programmed graphic solution that echoes the grille design and influences the overall design of the Ferrari SP48 Unica: making the transition from the black parts (including the windows, roof, and hood) to the bodywork a clear and distinct color scheme. The reduction in the size of the side windows and the elimination of the rear window further enhances the effect of the front part of the car on shielding it from the hot sun, emphasizing the distinctive power of the Ferrari SP48 Unica and giving it an integrated visual aesthetic.

From a top view, the central part of the roof stands out, including the geometric design of the air inlets located in front of the rear wing and integrated into the rear of the carbon fiber hood. From this perspective, it is clear that a great deal of research has gone into the design of the SP48 Unica, highlighting the aesthetics of symmetrical elements and interlocking lines.

The thermodynamic-hydrodynamic design of the Ferrari SP48 Unica has been further optimized to ensure that all cooling requirements are met and that a distinctive aerodynamic balance is achieved. The most obvious changes to the styling of the Ferrari F8 Tributo include the engine cooling air intake above the front bumper and below the rear spoiler. Each intake features a programmed grille that is deep and angled to maximize air intake. The engineers also placed the intercooler intake directly behind the side windows, which helps reduce the size of the side air intakes. The longer rear overhang helps reduce the suction in the roof area and enhances downforce at the rear of the car.

Inside the cabin, the new car follows the technical configuration of the Ferrari F8 Tributo (excluding the rear window), but the design team has invested a lot of research and development in its color scheme and decorative elements to perfectly express the beautiful design, sportiness and aggressive style of the Ferrari SP48 Unica.

For example, a specially developed black laser-perforated Alcantara® fabric is used on the seats and most of the trim in the cockpit, while underneath a fluorescent orange-red fabric is used to match the exterior color scheme. The pattern of the fabric, the hexagonal shape of the grille, and the programmed design of the roof paint echo a pleasing sense of articulation between the cabin interior and the exterior. In the cockpit of the Ferrari SP48 Unica, the polished door sill trim with the same laser-embossed hexagonal pattern is an eye-catcher. The application of matte carbon fiber gives the cockpit a distinctive technological and exclusive character and complements the Grigio Canna di Fucile Grey (Gun Metal Grey) trim.

A unique Ferrari Haute Couture

Ferrari Special Projects are designed to create unique Leapfrog models (known as One-Off models), tailored to each customer's requirements so that each customer can have a truly unique Leapfrog. Each project originates entirely from the client's idea and is then designed and developed by a team of designers from the Ferrari Design Center. Once the body proportions and styling have been determined, the team of designers will develop a detailed design and styling plan before moving on to the production phase of the new One-Off model. The whole process took on average more than a year, with the customer always involved in the design evaluation and model validation. The result is a unique Ferrari with the Leapfrog brand and the same quality as the other Leapfrog models produced at the Maranello factory.
