Cadillac has officially announced that its first all-electric SUV, the LYRIQ, will hit the domestic market in 2022. The new car will be the first production vehicle built with the all-new modular pure electric architecture. It will be positioned as a mid-size SUV, between the XT5 (4,813mm) and XT6 (5,050mm), and will be equipped with an all-new Ultium battery pack that will provide approximately 482km of pure electric range.

"Cadillac's first all-electric vehicle, the LYRIQ, will have a base price of less than $6 in North America, making it cheaper than comparable all-electric SUVs," Steve Carlisle, GM's executive vice president and president of North America, said at an event in which he outlined the pricing principles for the LYRIQ. The move appears to foreshadow a price drubbing by Cadillac against rivals such as Tesla, Mercedes and Audi.

In appearance, Cadillac Lyriq adopts a new minimalist design language, which also lays the foundation for the design direction of Cadillac brand in the future. The front face is equipped with angular irregular "black crystal" mesh, which has a very unique shape, and embedded matrix grid with LED device (supporting dynamic light effect). With huge diversion port and array texture on both sides, a style that is not angry and self-mighty; The slender vertical headlights on both sides are also cleverly integrated in the grille, which further enhances the visual feeling of the front face.

Coming to the side, the vehicle adopts the slip back design, the roof from the B-pillar to the rear of the car is a downward trend, dynamic fashion modeling; The lower waist line crisscross, and constructed by the line of countless faces, under the irradiation of different angles of light, can present different effects; On the details, there is also an LED light belt at the front wing plate, which further enhances the presence of waist line.

On the tail, the position of the rear window is also provided with an upward slightly warped spoiler, the design sense is extremely strong; The split taillight set with unique shape is dazzling. With matrix LED technology, it can support a variety of lighting modes. In terms of body size, the new car will be between the Cadillac XT5 (4,813mm) and XT6 (5,050mm), with details to be announced in the future.

Andrew Smith, Executive Director of Global Cadillac Design, said: "Lyriq represents the next iteration of brand style, an electrification technology that only Cadillac can express. Inside and out, Lyriq is a thoughtful integration of design and technology designed to make every drive an occasion."

On the interior, the highlight of the new car is a 33-inch curved OLED display that integrates navigation, entertainment, light control, HUD head-up Settings and GM's latest "Super Cruiser" driver assistance system. The display can also be divided into three areas, each displaying different information. Officials say the screen is the largest resolution in the industry and 64 times that of any vehicle, providing an amazing in-vehicle experience.

In terms of operation mode, the screen supports touch operation, and can also be switched between information and entertainment systems through the knob controller under the central control; As previously announced, the rear seat of the Lyriq concept will also have a display screen for passengers.

The new car also features a dual-plane augmented reality head-up display (HUD) that displays speed, navigation, and other types of information, as well as the Super Cruiser system for more robust and practical driving assistance. It is also worth mentioning that for the first time, the new car is equipped with a new road noise cancellation technology, with more microphones and accelerometers to detect the frequency range of the tire air chamber noise, and then reverse the noise cancellation, bringing a quiet in-cabin experience.

For power, the Lyriq will be based on GM's new electric modular platform and will use the new Ultium power battery, which may have a capacity of 100kW·h and provide a pure battery range of more than 482km. The charging system supports 150kW DC high-speed fast charge and 19kW standard charge. In addition, the new car is available in rear-drive and all-wheel-drive versions for consumers to choose from.

The Ultium battery system USES the latest aluminum nickel and cobalt manganese (NCMA) chemical materials, the materials used in the cathode aluminum, thereby reducing the demand for cobalt and other rare earth materials, compared with the other batteries, new batteries for cobalt decreased by 70%, while battery electronic devices are integrated into the module directly, eliminating the nearly 90% of the battery pack wiring.

In addition, Lyriq will be built at the Detroit-Hamtrak assembly plant, which will focus on electric vehicle production in the future. In the future, GM will develop all-electric mid-size SUVs for Chevrolet and Buick based on the Lyriq platform.
