While keeping the exterior of your car looking pristine is important, making sure everything under the hood is working properly will ensure your car runs. And, while you may not want to spend all your money to improve your car, you won't regret shelling out for motor oil.

Motor oil is one of the most important products you need for your car, and proper maintenance is a must. Letting your engine oil level get too low can be very detrimental to your car. If you want to change your oil yourself, make sure you're getting the right oil for your car. Here are some of the best motor oils available.

Valvoline founder, Dr. John Ellis, is credited as being the inventor of motor oil. So it's only fitting that's where we start this list of best motor oils. Valvoline now focuses on developing oils for high mileage engines. And if your car has less than 125,000 miles, you can enroll in a program which will give you a Valvoline warranty, if you follow their guidelines. Valvoline specifically has some of the best conventional oil available.

Total motor oil is more prominent in Europe than in the United States, but that doesn't mean it's not amongst the best motor oils available, especially as their brand becomes bigger in the states. Total is so respected, it's now the primary sponsor of the International Motor Sports Association, so you know it's trusted by some of the worlds best drivers.

Pennzoil's big marketing move is about keeping your engine clean and free of sludge. The less sludge in the engine, the better the components move, therefore, better power and fuel efficiency. Pennzoil is now Ferrari's official oil supplier, so you know it's one of the best motor oils available.

Known for having the best fully synthetic oil on the market, Mobil 1 is the preferred motor oil for most cars at the upper levels of motorsport. Mobil 1 is the official engine oil of NASCAR and the oil sponsor of the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 team. Mobil 1's synthetic oils are great for keeping a low viscosity at low temperatures.

Quaker State specializes in motor oil for older, high mileage cars. This company has created a conventional, synthetic blend of oils, all designed for older vehicles. The Defy High Mileage blends are a huge hit amongst car owners, that have between 200,000 and 300,000 miles on their engines.

Castrol Motor Oil is right there with the rest of the best motor oils available. Castrol has a name on a variety of racing circuits and makes great high-mileage oils. Castrol also has an oil-selector tool to inform customers of which oil your car is supposed to run on, which too many consumers are unaware of.

Having introduced synthetic oil in the 1970s Amsoil is one of the leaders in the field. Amsoil produced the first synthetic oil to be recognized by the American Petroleum Institute. Motorsport drivers are quick to mention Amsoil as a leader in performance, and they are a top sponsor in the North American racing circuits.

Although they aren't as highly recognized as their competitors, Royal Purple certainly doesn't lack when it comes to performance. Royal Purple is considered to be one of the best motor oils to use in a diesel vehicle. Hot Rod Magazine TV put Royal Purple through the ringer and it passed all the tests certainly making it one of the best motor oils available.

If you drive a diesel vehicle in an area with drastic temperature changes, then Shell Rotella is one of the best motor oils you can buy. Shell Rotella is also great at keeping the engine cleaner compared to competitors and is the perfect oil to use in vehicles with diesel particulate filters.

Johnson Evinrude also makes one of the leading motor oils for consumers. Probably the least known motor oil on this list, but that doesn't make it lesser quality. If you have a Johnson Evinrude engine you can even cut your oil usage in half, making this one of the best motor oils on the market.
