Thanks to modern technology and satellites, we've now been able to travel around the Earth and see what kinds of temperatures we encounter at various places. You can find the coldest places on our planet listed below. If you're wondering which ones are the world's coldest, then read on and find out for yourself!

Antarctica

Its average temperature is -89°C (-129°F) and its annual rainfall is less than 100mm (4 inches)!

Antarctica's barren landscape includes ice caps, glaciers and snow-capped peaks rising up to 6 km high. Antarctica was discovered in 1820 by an English naval officer, but it was not until a British expedition led by James Clark Ross explored the region in 1842 that it became known as an entire continent.

Because of its remoteness and extreme climate, Antarctica has few human inhabitants. There are a few research stations (Scott Base and McMurdo Station), but no permanent settlements can be found there. The largest settlement on the continent is Vostok Station at 1,876 km from the nearest inhabited land (South Pole).

Oymyakon

Oymyakon is located in Sakha, Russia. This city is the northernmost permanently inhabited locality in the world. It has an elevation of 453 meters above sea level and lies at the junction of two mountain ranges: the Oymyakon Range and Kolyma Range.

Oymyakon was named after a local Yakutian tribe called "Oimyakon". They lived there until they were forced to migrate because of a severe drought that lasted from 1887 to 1889. The town was founded by them in 1899 as a trading post for salt and fur.

Today, Oymyakon is best known for its harsh climate, which makes it one of the coldest places on our earth. It's so cold that during winter months an average temperature between -40 degrees Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit) and -50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit) can be found there.

The record low temperature in Oymyakon is -71 degrees Celsius (-96 Fahrenheit), which was recorded in July 1928. However, this record only lasted for 12 hours due to high humidity levels at that time

Vostok Station

The Vostok Station, also known as Russian Base East or simply Vostok, is the northernmost permanently inhabited settlement at the geographic South Pole. It is located on King George Island in the Queen Maud Land region of Antarctica. The station was established in August 1956 and is currently operated by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). The station has been visited annually by several expeditions to Antarctica, including those of the United States, Japan, Poland and Argentina.

The original research base was built by the Soviet Union on King George Island in 1957. The station was visited by an American scientific expedition led by Edmund Stump in 1958–59, making it one of the first places ever visited by humans at the South Pole.

Plateau Station

Plateau Station is a small settlement in Antarctica, on the eastern shore of Lake Bonney, just north of Bonney Island. It was first recorded in the South Magnetic Range Survey of 1947, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant Commander Kenneth L. Plateau, U.S. Navy, who commanded U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 at McMurdo Station in the 1956–57 season. The location was formerly known as Mount Bonney (or Bonneville) and was renamed after an Australian station at Cape Denison in 1997.[2]

Plateau Station is located on the eastern shore of Lake Bonney and is one of the few inhabited sites available to resupply and support scientific research in Antarctica. It is home to a number of different research stations including McMurdo Station and Casey Station, both part of National Science Foundation's Southernmost Research Station program, as well as several smaller bases such as Scott Base, Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, Palmer Station (which includes McMurdo Sound), and Russian Vostok Research Base.
