Located in Rawai just past Karon View Point heading South or just past Promthep Cape heading North, Windmill Viewpoint is one of the best places to sit and watch a sunset.

Windmill Viewpoint is given its name because of the Power Turbines you will see sitting on top of it when you go. As all things in Thailand a simple name is generally what you get. A more descriptive name of the location could be something like Promthep Viewpoint or Susnset Viewpoint because it is an ideal place to get a good view of both. In fact the view or Promthep Cape is better from Windmill Viewpoint than it is from Promthep Viewpoint.

Sitting on top of a small mountain with a plateau top that is directly on the coastal shore of Phuket, Windmill Viewpoint offers a direct view out into the ocean. Because it is a plateaued area there is ample room to find a spot away from crowds and set up for taking photographs, video or to just sit and admire the view. One time I was there I actually saw several wedding photographers taking photos of several different wedding parties at the same time. About 100 meters away from them was a European pop star of sorts shooting a music video. Needless to say the area is quite large so you don't need to worry too much about it being crowded to get a great view.

From the edge of the mountain you can get a clear view directly out to the point of Promthep Cape and some other areas around it. You can clearly see the path leading out to the point and the area that makes up the park where the Promthep Viewpoint is. A little closer to the base of the mountain are areas like Yanui Beach with its interesting rock formations inside the small cove.

The Windmill Viewpoint in Rawai, as I have said is an ideal place to watch a sunset. You get an unobstructed view out over the ocean. There are lots of places to sit or stand and not have many people around you even when it is very busy because the area is a giant plateau. I love going up there and taking photographs both of Promthep Point and sunsets for this reason. I can easily find a place to park, setup my gear on the edge of a portion of cliff, use live view on my phone and watch the sunset as I adjust my camera settings and snap photos, time lapse and video. The only issue I ever had was some Chinese tourists flying a drone in my view, but that's what Photoshop is for. You can get real nice images with boats between the coast of Phuket and the island sitting just off the shore and the sun dropping right in between. Because you are at a high vantage point there is always a nice reflection of the sun stretched out across the water and as it falls behind the horizon the island, palm trees and boats make lovely silhouettes.

The drive up to Windmill Viewpoint is a fun one with many twists and turns. You get a nice view off the mountain side of the ocean as you climb up to the top. As seen in the video above you will encounter some slower moving traffic like tuk-tuks so it is always best to give yourself some time if you plan to be there sunset or another specific point in the day.

Windmill Viewpoint in Phuket is my number one choice to photograph and watch sunsets on Phuket. I find it the best place to get an unobstructed aerial view of a portion of the island without the need for a drone. It is a great spot if you plan to have photographs taken for special events like weddings and in my opinion is one of the best viewpoints on the island because of its size. There are concession stands once you reach the top. They are about double the price for water and bottled or canned refreshments compared to 7-11 or Family Mart so if you are on a budget you are best to bring some with you when you come. They also sell smoothies and have coconuts available for they typical prices you will find at the night markets. There are snack foods as well but no restaurants so don't plan on eating at the viewpoint when you go.
