Cambodia, the ‘Kingdom of Wonder’, has a wonderfully unique and rich culture beneath its highly controlled political setting. However, many visitors overlook the fact of immersing themselves in this spiritually vibrant nation’s traditions and culture. Visit Siem Reap during your next stay to explore its colourful personality.

Ancient temples and architecture

Get a taste of Khmer culture when you take temple tours in Siem Reap. There are more than 1, 000 of these, which have been set in the Angkor Archaeological Park. A visit to Angkor Wat should be at the top of your list. It is the largest religious structure in the world. This massive monument houses some stunning examples of Khmer art and architecture. Designed to signify Mount Meru, the home of Hindu gods, Angkor Wat was constructed at the beginning of the 12th century. It also has many intricate carvings which feature heavenly nymphs and detailed bas-reliefs.

Other religious destinations you should add to your itinerary include Bayon Temple and Ta Prohm, which has been featured in the famous 2001 Angelina Jolie movie, ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’. Many hotels in Siem Reap Cambodia, are located within a stone’s throw away from such landmarks, and those who stay there never fail to visit them. Learn about the religious practices of devotees when you visit such sites and connect with the heritage of the nation by exploring its history.

Traditional arts and crafts

Venture beyond the famous temples of Siem Reap and get insights into the daily life of the locals. Head to places which have artisans, try your hand at artwork like stone carving, silk weaving or lacquerware. Get a taste of Khmer history, spirituality, and folklore that have been deeply embedded in each of these products. Visit venues that sell art pieces and purchase them to support the local community. Hotels like FCC Angkor Siem Reap have even brought such traditional designs to the guestrooms and public spaces of the property. These especially adorn venues like The Mansion and Scribe bar and grill. Therefore, their guests can get a taste of the artistic side of the location right under their roof.

Vibrant performing arts industry

Bring ancient mythology to life and place it in a modern resilience when you choose to experience the performing art scene in Siem Reap. Traditional Apsara dances are linked with Buddhist and Hindu heritage. They are characterised by graceful movements and are performed by donning detailed and colourful attire.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus, gives a modern twist to the Khmer heritage. These performances include music, theatre and acrobatics. They related tales of the lifestyle of the locals. Agricultural traditions and community practices are some of the themes that are highlighted through Chhayam performances and Peacock dances.

Street food stalls and local markets

The cuisine in Siem Reap is mainly characterised by rustic Khmer ingredients. The food in this area is rather aromatic and flavourful as well. These elements emerge mainly from coconut milk blended with kroeung (pounded herb paste). Freshwater fish is also a staple and can be found in popular dishes like Fish Amok (steamed fish curry). These dishes connect you to the heritage of the region, as well as its agricultural roots.

To get a real feel for the culture in Siem Reap, head to the local markets. Psar Chaa and the Angkor Night Market are easy to find and visit. These hubs sell handmade crafts, local spices, and traditional snacks. You can find everything from hand-woven silk scarves to carved wooden bowls. Street food stalls line the paths. Try Nom Banh Chok, which are Khmer rice noodles in a green curry fish gravy. Look for Bai Sach Chrouk, a dish of grilled pork served over rice with pickled vegetables. Talk to the vendors to learn about their goods. Watch how they cook the food on open grills or in large pots. Pay attention to how locals eat and interact. This gives you a clear look at daily life in Cambodia.
