What is the Importance of Responsible Tourism in Koh Samui? Why Should I Be a Responsible Traveler?
Be an eco-friendly traveller
Koh Samui is visited by millions of tourists each year, people love to flock to the mainland and islands, because of the gorgeous beaches, food, wildlife and lush surroundings. This very fact leaves much of the islands in a state of despair especially when it comes to wildlife and the environment, which gets thoroughly exploited for the sake of tourism. Keep reading to find out how you can be a responsible traveller and help preserve the beauty of Koh Samui.
Wildlife
Koh Samui along with the rest of the islands is known for its rich wildlife and dense jungles. Thailand is still a developing country and its tourism industry notoriously exploits animals to lure tourists to make a living. Elephants, turtles, monkeys and tigers are among the most exploited animals in the industry. Elephants and tigers are forcibly removed from their natural habitat and are made to work in the tourism industry. Avoid places where they advertise elephant rides, feedings etc. Only wild elephants are protected under Thai laws, so there is little you can do about the elephants already in the industry but avoid patronising them. When it comes to Tigers they are captured and drugged to make them docile for visitors, so stay clear of all tiger temples. Monkeys get chained and are made to perform tricks for the amusement of passersby and tourists.
However, if you really want to engage with the wildlife all animal sanctuaries are not the same, one of the best places to visit is Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai.
Shopping in Koh Samui
When out shopping don't purchase anything made out of ivory, tiger pelts, turtle shells and endangered animals. Koh Samui and Thailand are infamous for their markets and for the diverse goods that can be found there. Some markets might sell food made out of shark fins, tiger bones and bird nests. All these should be avoided to prevent poaching of wild and endangered animals. Tiger bones are especially common in markets due to their importance in Chinese Medicine. Be a mindful traveller and stay clear of all such trappings. When it comes to accomodation, one can find many luxury resorts in Koh Samui, the likes of Santiburi Koh Samui are some of the best options around the island.
Choose the right beach
Tourism has its downfalls when it comes to islands like Koh Samui. Thailand has some of the most visited coastlines in the world and this factor has played havoc in the environment surrounding the beaches and islands. One prime example was the Koh Phi Phi island and Maya Bay which became inundated with tourists after the location was featured in the motion picture "The Beach" Following the influx of tourists the authorities had no choice but to close it down for tourism to allow the beaches surrounding the island to recover. If you wish you can stay away from beaches like Patong which are overdeveloped and overcrowded most of the time. Unchecked constructions in the form of shops, restaurants and cafes have resulted in changes to the natural habitat and trash is a common site. When visiting the beaches go for more secluded ones, and be mindful of all that you bring to the beach and take them back with you if you don't have a proper means of disposing of them.
Snorkelling and Jet skiing are other common sights on islands like Koh Samui. It is best to be careful when attempting any of these activities. Snorkelers should be conscientious not to step on the delicate coral life with flippers on and whenever possible opt for an ethical operator when going on snorkelling tours. Jet skiing should be avoided at all costs if possible. Although it is a fun activity it pollutes the seas and adds to the noise pollution which disturbs marine life.
