Tasmania is Australia’s smallest state but it sure packs a punch with all its truly iconic attractions. This island state is a must-visit for all wanderlusts, especially if you’re looking for a unique and refreshing destination that is as cool as the other side of the pillow. From its surreal blend of art and culture to its mouth-watering culinary delights, Tasmania has something to offer to every type of traveller.

So put on your walking shoes, don your explorer's hat, and join me on a journey to discover the top places to visit in Hobart!

Bruny Island

Ever heard of an island within an island off another island? Well, that’s Bruny Island! I get it, that's a lot of islands! But this island is actually split into two more islands! This breathtaking land is full of surprises and the best way to uncover most of them in one go is aboard the popular Bruny Island cruises. The island is home to numerous magical coves, clifftops, bays, beaches, and rugged coastline, and you can enjoy all of them from the waters with a cruise.

These Bruny cruises also offer you the chance to encounter the local wildlife of Tasmania including dolphins, seals, seabirds, migratory whales, penguins, and more. White you’re on the island, be sure to check out the Truganini Lookout, one of the most instagrammed locations in the country.

Bay of Fires

Alright, the Bay of Fires just might be my personal favourite in this bunch. Just hearing the name takes me back to the multi-colour pallet of turquoise-blue waters, white sandy shores, clear blue skies and the orange-hued granite boulder rocks. When I first set foot here, like everyone else I figured the bay got its name from these orange lichen-covered rocks, but that was not the case.

The name was in fact, bestowed by a captain who witnessed the fires of the resident Aboriginals on the beaches. You can find rocks of all sizes here, sharp, round, tiny, large boulders, and even perfectly shaped cubes which will be screaming ‘climb me’! You can explore this land through guided tours or self-guided walks, just make sure you cover every nook cranny!

Gordon River

This is one of those lists that get better as you read along. Strahan is one of the most underrated locales in the whole of Australia, to me. Located on the far west coast of Tasmania, this is a charming port town acting as a gateway to the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area. Taking a scenic cruise down Gordon River is one of the best ways to get in touch with some of Australia's pristine natural beauty. A voyage here on a popular sightseeing tour through the lush rainforest and raw wilderness will have you feeling that you are on the edge of the world.

Adding to this, the dark, pitch-black water of Gordon River mirroring the riverside greenery gives the whole experience a bit of surrealness! The cruises here let you step on the shores for guided excursions including at Sarah Island, a former brutal convict colony. The guides are known to be very attentive and are more than happy to answer all your burning questions!

Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair

Hiking in Cradle Mountain - St. Clair National Park could fill out a week of your Tasmanian itinerary and is something you shouldn't miss when you’re here. Along with extraordinary views of Cradle Mountain, you will find your way through dense forests, past towering trees, along with a chance to meet and greet the nation’s wild fauna! Getting to the summit is more than rewarding with breathtaking views of the highlands and the deepest lake in Australia waiting for you.
