Georgetown County, which arose from a colonial plantation culture, and Horry County, which had modest origins in agriculture and timber trades, are the two separate cultures that make up the Grand Strand in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Native Americans from the Waccamaw and Winyah tribes, who termed the region "Chicora," which translates to "the land," are also a part of the region's history. The Burroughs & Collins Company constructed the Seaside Inn, the area's first hotel, in 1901. Up until that point, the Grand Strand had been home to struggling farmers and fishermen. The business built a railway to the shore and sold oceanfront properties for almost $25 each, with less well-off people paying in around $2.50 yearly installments. If a buyer built a house worth $500 or more, they got an additional lot for free. The community was given the name Myrtle Beach as a result of the many wax myrtle trees that were growing along the shore, according to Mrs. F.E. Burroughs, the founder's wife.

Simeon B. Chapin, a Chicago industrialist, bought Myrtle Beach in 1912 and made investments in the town's growth. His name is inscribed on the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, the public park, and the library. Businessmen constructed Arcady in the 1920s, an affluent resort that featured the Ocean Forest Hotel and the region's first golf club, Pine Lakes International Country Club. For almost 30 years, the Ocean Forest, with its 300 rooms, pools, health club, stables, and crystal chandeliers, served as the hub of social life in Myrtle Beach.

The Intracoastal Waterway was opened for commercial shipping in 1936, and Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938. The Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was established in the 1940s for coastal patrols during World War II.

Hurricanes have played a crucial role in the area's history and development, with Hurricane Hazel in 1954 clearing the way for newer hotels and homes. The 1960s saw a golf boom, with 115 courses today. The 1970s and '80s saw the construction of attractions, homes, and retail shops, resulting in the area becoming one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas.
