The countdown to the Southern Hemisphere’s most anticipated cultural event has already begun. Ever since Vivid Sydney announced its brand new pillar - Vivid Food, the excitement levels have been at an all time high!

Sydney is once again set to transform into every photographer’s wildest dreams, embellishing its towering edifices and national landmarks with multi-coloured hues and awe-inspiring patterns. What started out as a small-scale event in 2009, has now evolved into a nationwide celebration of lights, music, ideas, and now food!

This year’s program is set to be the biggest of its kind since its inception. So, here are some of the latest information and hot takes to celebrate the countdown of Vivid Sydney 2023.

Just like last year, and the year preceding it, and the one before, the main highlight of the festival is the ‘Lighting of the Sails’ of The Opera House. Every year, the Australian icon takes a new form of colour and design that holds rich cultural and historical significance. Thousands flock the harbour to get a good look at this man-made wonder! Although, this year’s artwork is yet to be revealed, based on the subliminal hints and the predictable direction of the festival's theme, it’s probably gonna revolve around ‘nature’.

Just as popular are the Vivid cruises, which offer guests the best views of the Opera House and other attractions from the waters! Reserve your seats early if you’re looking for an experience for the ages!

To mark the 100 day countdown, the festival announced its three new installations for the 2023 edition, including two free attractions.

Lightscape

The globally acclaimed multi-sensory experience of light, sound, and colours is making its way to our favourite Australian city after a successful stint at the U.K, U.S, and Melbourne. The Royal Botanic Garden will transform into an ethereal world complete with towering tree canopies of vivid colours, larger-than-life illuminated flowers, and breathtaking glowing tunnels.

The Last Ocean

The next attraction is trash. No, literally! The Last Ocean, an ode to one of Earth's unique ecosystems, the Ross Sea of Antarctica, is a montage of repeated patterns of ‘ice sheet’ made up of reclaimed ocean rubbish. Walk on the expansive artwork as your movement stirs up the seas – causing them to splash up and transform the ice’s colour and shape under your feet! It’s the ultimate chance for you to step onto the continent’s icy wonderland without harming it!

Barerarerungar

Renowned multi-disciplinary artist and curator Maree Clarke is putting her head together with building projection specialist The Electric Canvas to enhance the facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia into a symbol of communal reflection. The facade of the MCA will feature a sea of river reeds, a symbol of safe travels and friendship. Maree is famous for wearing her oversized necklace of river reeds which references a communal practice of utilising nature’s raw materials.

Vivid Food

What to expect for Vivid Food? Being a culinary giant of Australia, Sydney’s food scene is special – world-class restaurants, renowned food maestros, producers and venues. Food has been the perfect compliment to the festival of lights, music and ideas, and it is high time we take this to the next level. Celebrating all those that make our culinary scene unique is what Vivid Food is all about.

Expect never-before-seen food menus, well-acclaimed international chefs, multi-sensory degustations, popups along the Light Walk, along with 3-D installations and projections across the city’s finest restaurants and bars. You can also expect to see the bartenders and mixologists shaking up their game and come up with unique drinks menus and shows as well! Even some of the Vivid Sydney cruises will be upping their game to offer one-of-a-kind culinary experiences.

Stay tuned for more updates and info in the coming months!
