new zealand
If you've seen the Lord of the Rings films, you already know why New Zealand is at the top of most travelers' must-see lists.
Lock up?
Freedom is. We don't have a pandemic here in Aotearoa (New Zealand). And our only lockdown (level four) was March last year. Auckland, our biggest city did go into level 3 a few times over the the year because of a couple of community outbreaks but they were only a hand full of people with COVID. And they were contained pretty quickly and efficiently. So although we have been really lucky as a country, it wasn't luck that spared us. It was following good advice that saved us from COVID spreading into the community.

I will tread carefully with this one, ensuring I don’t jinx any impending freedoms as dreams are fast becoming reality and my bank account is missing its old friend Bookings.com. I’m ready to enter the Qantas Club lounge, get the dust off the chair and race when boarding is called. Restricted travelling enables an easier decision making process when choosing a location, and I’ve been thinking back on an aesthetically pleasing trip I took a few years ago to the North Island in New Zealand. So dig out the passport, we’re heading abroad.
Life After You
My Dearest New Zealand, I know you said we’d always be friends, but it just doesn’t feel the same. I know I said I’ll always come back, but I just want to be there. And I know it will never be like it was, but that doesn’t make me want you any less.

Since moving to New Zealand back in March of 2020, before the pandemic of course. I have been on the hunt to try my best to do all the things that go off the beat and path! Sure tourist attractions are fun, but they can be crowded and over-done. I've made it an important mission to find hidden gems all across the country that could fit any sort of traveler!

Katie and I arrived after noon and slightly flustered to the Aoroki/Mount Cook National Park carpark. From what I had read, it would take us three hours to climb to the Mueller Hut, but don't believe everything you read on the internet. It was already 2pm and we ferociously packed our bags for the overnight stay, as my mind subconsciously calculated the hours of daylight we had left.

There's always a first for everything, they say. New Zealand, - much alike this post - was a trip of many firsts. With unfamiliar faces to unfamiliar places.

Sometimes the most amazing moments can happen when we just let universe lead the path... In February of 2016 I had a overwhelming feeling to sell everything I owned and travel to New Zealand... I got a working holiday visa and hopped on a plane. When I arrived in New Zealand I was immediately taken back by the beauty of the country. Staying at a hostel I met some friends and they were going trekking around New Zealand. A 21 year old German Girl and at 19 year old German boy, with countless others along the way... Jana and Jonah and I went on many hikes together.

March 17th 2020, I jumped on several different planes. I made my way to New Zealand. Less than a week later everything was shut down due to COVID-19. I've been sat in isolation ever since I arrived.

This old relic of a mining equipment now sits at the side of a muddy path in Ross is an interesting photo opportunity that led to a walk through a key part of New Zealand's history.

Darcy's alarm went off at 5 A.M. as we had discussed the night before. I'd chosen not to wake him up at two when I had decided I was no longer going for an early morning swim. We'd spent the entire night curled up under our towels trying to keep warm and turning over in the car seats in an attempt to get comfortable, the last thing I wanted was to dip into what I confidently assume would be the ice cold water of the river at the campground. I had already changed my alarm to ring at 5:30, but he groggily reached to silence his.
