Miles, Not Hours
Once upon a time, there was a Scottish man walking into my bar, asking for a pint of Guinness. I'm sure there are better starts for a joke like this, but this is a true story for me. The gentleman was on the wiser side of age, and told me his lifelong dream was to travel from LA, California to Miami, Florida on his motorcycle. He stopped along his travels to the bar I tended, fortunately. Making conversation, he made an observation about subtle differences between an American's vs. Scottish fellow's lifestyle. Nothing too drastic, but the one difference sticking out to me the most was how we differ on measuring distance. I thought he was referring to the classical 'mile' vs. 'kilometer' argument, but he caught me by surprise. He asked how far was the nearest city. Instinctively, I said about an hour or so of driving, and that's exactly what he wanted to hear from me. "When did we start measuring journeys by time, and rid ourselves of miles AND kilometers?" He had a chuckle with his beer, and could see it in my eyes how right he was. I journeyed to Virginia Beach to see a Hozier concert with time ahead of me, but the trip home carried distance.

Fleeting
Soaring above me, the mountains were truly breath-taking. I've lost count of the number of hours I've spent simply staring at them despite my short time in that country. To one side, our driver shared a story about the construction of the mountain road, and behind me two friends are laughing.

Just 105 Miles South of Key West
A short window of time opened during the Obama administration allowing Americans to visit Cuba for family or educational reasons. To celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in 2017, my husband and I booked a cruise and tour in Havana. My father's side of the family came from Cuba, and I have always been curious about his homeland. Although I don't speak the language, just being there would rekindle interest in my heritage.

* Editor's Notes: Anything italicized is part of a series of notes I wrote during the trip that I found recently. Some pictures have been edited to preserve the privacy of everyone who went on the trip. That said they were edited by an unprofessional (me) so don't judge me too harshly for my lack of skills.

A Journey Of Joy With The Children of Tanzania
My feet ache and my energy is severely depleted by the time we arrive at the mountain village of Mtae in Tanzania. We’ve just walked eight hours, ascending about 1,000 meters in one day. It’s five in the afternoon as I attempt to wash my sweaty body with cold water from a bucket. For the first time in my life, I have to use a hole in the ground as a toilet and clean myself up afterwards with water and my hands.

Follow the Blues Brothers to Old Joliet Prison
Chicagoland is a term used to describe the towns surrounding the Windy City, many of which have personalities all of their own. One such gem is just an hour southwest of Chicago and it’s got quite a history. It includes a prison and a lot of celebrities that have passed through there.

What I Found On My Mini Vacation
While COVID-19 reigns, the movement for our world and its inhabitants were restricted. No one traveled for vacation because of fear. Fear of getting infected with a virus with no known cure. In some countries, the elderly and other humans with various health issues became house rats.

The Journey
We all have different life experiences. Some of us were born and raised in the same town and have no desire to leave. Then others of us can't seem to stay in one place for more than a year or two. They are always looking for the next adventure or the next thrill.
