Siestas are Interesting

Perceptions from the really deep South.

The City of Manizales in the Republic of Colombia, Paradise Regainable

There’s good news in the world but it seems weighted towards the Southern Hemisphere although it starts somewhat north of the Equator. A continent, artificially severed by a canal, curled around a three pronged spine. Long suppressed, exploited and despoiled, it has seemingly shaken its lethargy and from various umbrae is experimenting with innovative solutions to intractable problems. An aroma emerges, the scent of potential tranquility blended with equity and possibly, even joy. But it’s just a possibility, plausible only because of dark distractions almost everywhere else; very, very dark distractions; drawing in entropy, negativity and despair as though from the gravity well of a dead and decaying universe.

Nature creates life from death, its Shiva’s obsession. I wonder if that’s what’s happening and in wondering, a ludicrous image forms of silly memories. I recall the driving dead who dwell somewhat to the north of this emergent once and future paradise. The very short little old men driving where we almost couldn’t see them, accompanied by their blue haired ladies. Then I feel embarrassed by the allusion, perhaps because I’m now of an age to be counted among them, although I still tend to put the pedal to the metal.

It feels good to contemplate silly thoughts in the midst of the consistently terrible news echoing from the north. Too frequently, even though it’s far away, its shadows cast a somber pall, even here. The old world and its closest progeny seem bent on a long, drawn out suicide, but perhaps, the Dancer’s dance of destruction fuels his creative impulse and from the present the future is merely gazing at the death throes of the past.

Silliness is important I think. In a positive sense it’s a sign of health and hope, it fuels rainbows and waterfalls and ought not to be restricted to the very young. This southern continent abounds in silliness although not always in its positive shades. It wastes a great deal of time, in fact, it’s made that an art form, which frustrates those of us who’ve spent too much time in the north, but it’s a frustration to which one can become accustomed, grow to appreciate and perhaps, even eventually embrace. Corruption has long bred here and inequity but that’s true everywhere else, it’s just better disguised in some places than in others. However, now, there are indicia of a healthy intolerance rising and, who knows, why not new paradigms here?

Siestas are interesting, one can get used to them and even learn to work around them. Hasta luego mis amigos.

Come down and visit,… you hear? But leave your troubles behind.
