Progress Vs. Culture

The Reasons Why Differences Between Cultures Is Important

Two Different Countries. Two Different Worlds. Two Different Lifestyles. The world is filled with many different countries. They all have their own ways of life. Each is individual in it’s own way. There may be times when certain traits overlap, but there will always be some core differences between them. Whether it be the people, landscape, weather, jobs, foods, or traditions. They are all unique. The country to which I am going to be writing about currently though, is Honduras. I’m going to be showing the differences between one of the most popular countries and a country which has a bad rap of being extremely dangerous. America Vs. Honduras.

In Honduras, life can seem to be similar to America in some places and in other places, completely different. You’ll have areas were you would think, this looks like a place in America, based on the buildings or the technology. But then you’ll have places that don’t have power and live in houses made of dirt. I like to call it two and a half world. Sometimes it can be like a very first world country. Then there will places that are very third world. It’s a good mix of the two. But even though some of the places in Honduras can seem to be similar to America, there are core things that are below the surface that makes Honduras it’s own. For instance, although there are building made to be used just like apartments in America, they don’t have dumpsters to put their trash in. So all the trash gets thrown in the middle of the streets. Or how most people have cell phones, yet there are animals roaming the streets. Or how are paving the roads to be nicer, but can’t seem to enforce safe traffic laws and regulations. It almost like Honduras is trying to get to the place where America is lifestyle wise, but is missing quite a few core functions that make up the organization America has. Is this a good thing? Is it a good thing that Honduras hasn’t fully made the transfer to first world. It’s a tricky question and not one to take lightly. On one side, I would say that it is a good thing for Honduras to get more organized and modern so that they have better lives. But on the other side, I think it’s good that there are differences in the culture that make it unique. So what’s the solution? Should Honduras continue to progress towards becoming modern or hold onto their individuality?

I think the answer is a little bit of both. They should be progressing towards modernism in the sense of safety, efficiency, and conveniency. But they shouldn’t give up some of the core things that make their country, their own. For instance, the people in America can some times be rude and nasty to their fellow human, due to the fact that they care only about themselves constantly. But here in Honduras, majority of people are very nice and kind to some random just walking down the street. I think this is somewhat due to their motivations. But I that is one aspect of the culture that makes them different and in my opinion, better than a lot of modern countries such as America. The way the people treat each other, the way they work, the way the they eat, the way the live can be enhanced by modernism, but shouldn’t change their core lifestyles. Life here is different than in the states. And even though sometimes it isn’t fun when the power goes out for a few hours, that doesn’t take away from the fact that even without having amazing cell service, without having the best phones or houses, the way these people live there life is unique and shouldn’t be disregarded for the sake of progress. America tend to live in a bubble. We think everything and everyone should be like us, act like us, talk like us. That is simply just not right. If all of us were the same, life would be pretty boring and dull. It’s the individuality that each person has that makes this world better than anything we could come up with on our own.

So to conclude this paper, I love the Honduras culture. I think there are a lot of ways America would be better if we took some of the traits of the Honduran people. And I think Honduras also has a lot of areas where I think they could improve. The key thing is that we don’t loose the things that make up our culture for the sake of progress. I love progress, but if it compromises what myself, it is no longer progress to me. It’s a step backwards.
