Visit Black Sand Beach

A must-see in Maui and one of the most visited destinations along the Road to Hana is Wai'anapanapa State Park. To avoid the crowds, arrive early in the morning.

After spending the night in Hana, we went to the park around 8:30 in the morning to enjoy the gorgeous light and spent an hour strolling along the breathtaking Pa'iloa black sand beach and coastal paths, passing a sea cave and blowhole. Longer walks are possible along the lava shore.

The park now requires reservations, which may be made up to 30 days in advance on the Go Wai'anapanapa website. Both an entry ticket ($5 for each passenger) and a parking coupon ($10 for each car) are required.

Indulge in snorkeling at the Molokini Crater

Many tourists consider snorkeling at Molokini's extinct volcano crater to be a must-do activity while visiting Maui.

We observed parrotfish, bannerfish, and a white-tipped reef shark at this exceptional location with its coral reef. While we were underwater, we even heard eerie whale songs.

Most excursions combine snorkeling in Turtle Town with a visit to the crater to observe Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu). You could also be fortunate enough to observe dolphins and whales.

Attracting up to 1000 people each day is Molokini Crater. Visit with Redline Rafting, which departs at 7am with a maximum of 20 people, in order to arrive before most boats.

Visit the Big Beach

A little further north, at Big Beach—also called Makena Beach and Oneloa Beach—you will arrive.

Big Beach, one of Maui's top beaches, is a lovely, broad sandy beach with stunning vistas and a lengthy shoreline. Regardless of how crowded the beach is, you will find room and seclusion due to the unspoiled beauty and wide-open landscapes. Due to its strong shore break, Big Beach is a popular spot for boogie boarders.

It is difficult to get in and out of the sea when the surf is high. Because the waves may be very strong, inexperienced swimmers should always use caution when swimming in the water.

Watch Whales in the sea

Thousands of humpback whales travel to Hawaii throughout the winter from Alaska to breed, bear children, and feed their calves in the warm, shallow waters. The best place to see them is in Maui.
