When people think of airports, they probably already have a certain idea in mind: a spacious, utilitarian venue that has businessmen everywhere, police dogs, and families on vacation rushing to the nearest terminals. Most people really don't think about the airport's architecture, and that's a shame.

Some of the most beautiful airports in the world are worth visiting, if only to admire the architecture and how strikingly gorgeous the buildings really are. Don't believe it? Take a look at these photos below, and then get back to us.

Wellington International Airport - New Zealand

A true testament to airport design, Wellington International Airport has been wowing travelers with its breathtaking architecture, rich coloration, and more since 1959. Every airport terminal features beautiful geometric windows that give full views of airplanes as they take off.

To a point, it'd be understandable if local Kiwis wanted to just go there to hang out. The cafeteria more closely resembles a more upscale version of Chipotle than it does an airport cafeteria. But, the real crowning glory of this airport is The Rock—a special traveler's lounge that is known for its geometric paneling, its club-like appearance, and its comfy seating.

Simply put, this beautiful airport puts most other international airports to shame—and that's why it's regularly cited as one of the most beautiful airports in the world.

Dubai International Airport - United Arab Emirates

If you're a fan of futuristic design, then you'll understand why this gem is on lists of the most beautiful airports in the world. Simply put, its all-glass exterior and crisp lighting makes it look like a futuristic city out in the middle of the desert.

It's also worth noting that famed architect Paul Andreau had designed airport after airport around the time that he created Dubai International Airport. Though he designed huge projects for major names, most critics agree that this is his best one ever.

Beijing Capital International Airport - China

Beijing Capital International Airport is positively massive in size, and that's part of why it's such an impressive structure. However, what really sets this airport apart from many of the others is its beautifully futuristic airport terminals.

The airport has plenty of statues, gorgeous lighting, and open spaces. Everything is done in a beautiful gold, red, and metal motif—especially the newest section, Terminal 3. Even when it's as crowded as can be, it's hard to deny that Beijing Capital is one of the most beautiful airports in the world.

But wait, that's not all! Terminal 3's colorful design also helps people determine where they're supposed to go. Function and beauty—all in one!

Barajas Airport - Spain

Along with being one of the most beautiful airports in the world, the Barajas Airport also might be one of the trippiest out there. Between its wavy wooden ceilings and its wild color schemes, it's easy to feel like you're stuck in an Alice in Wonderland trip.

Its terminals are modern in architecture, colorful, and incredibly spacious. In many ways, this beauty is just as much of a work of art as it is a commerce and travel point. Surreal? Yes. Breathtaking? Absolutely.

King Abdulaziz International Airport - Saudi Arabia

Located in Jeddah, the King Abdulaziz International Airport has gotten global acclaim for being one of the most spectacular airports ever built, and easily one of the most beautiful airports in the world that's still in use.

With its striking white motif, organic architectural lines, beautiful accents, and absolutely breathtaking views, it's impossible not to be impressed with the airport design work put into this. But, it's not all about looks, either.

King Abdulaziz International Airport also happens to be a state-of-the-art travel center that's fully equipped to take care of every need a traveler could have. In fact, there's even a special airport terminal that's solely devoted to people who are doing their Hajj and a railroad that brings people to a hotel dedicated to flyers.

Needless to say, Saudi Arabia seems to know how to travel in style.

Carrasco International Airport - Uruguay

Carrasco International Airport is a relative newcomer to the ranks of the most beautiful airports in the world. Though it's much smaller than many of the other airports here, it's hard not to see the appeal. The sleek, clean, white buildings just look beautiful. The entire exterior is lit beautifully, and the whole venue also is surrounded by healthy green lawns.

Inside, the architecture remains just as visually appealing as its outside. Everything just feels clean, futuristic, and welcoming. As a result, Carrasco International Airport definitely gives people a great first impression as they set foot in Uruguay.

Heathrow Airport - England

London's Heathrow Airport has actually become one of the most famous airports in Europe—partly because it's one of the most beautiful airports in the world, and partly due to its occasional celebrity appearances.

Much like with other airports on this list, every terminal is done up in a beautiful brushed metal motif, and all the airport terminals have plenty of windows to let in natural light.

Heathrow Airport also has been spotted in a number of major movies, including Love, Actually and A Fish Called Wanda. Since it's a common filming location, it's easy to see why Heathrow is somewhat of a tourist destination for that reason alone.

O'Hare International Airport - USA

O'Hare is a really, truly beautiful airport, primarily because of the fact that it looks like it belongs in an 80s movie. Its industrial-style architecture, fluid-looking ceilings, and its slightly old-school tiling make it look striking in its own unique way.

But, the architecture alone doesn't make O'Hare Airport in Chicago such a standout. What really makes it one of the most beautiful airports in the world is its art collection, including a mesmerizing neon light ceiling display called "Sky's The Limit."

Visitors who go here get to see amazing sculptures, beautiful light displays, and awesome artwork in every major terminal. What more could you say?

Denver International Airport - USA

Denver International Airport is both one of the most beautiful airports in the world and one of the creepiest. The airport itself has become famous for having each airport terminal topped with a white tent, giving it a "Tent City" exterior.

The airport's interior, though, is what really has gained notoriety. It seems like everyone knows about the place's unusual artwork and architecture. Inside, the airport looks like a giant mall—and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Perhaps the most startling artwork is the airport's painting, which has caused many conspiracy theorists to believe that the Denver International Airport may be a tribute to the New World Order. Even so, it's a beautiful piece of art.

Every airport terminal at Denver seems to have its own subtle theme, which both stands out and blends in at the same time. Artwork can be found at every terminal, and it's really memorable enough to take your breath away.
