Karon View Point

What You Should Know Before You Go

Located just South of Karon Beach, Karon View Point is a great place to go to get a view over the city of Karon. It's one of my top picks for places to watch and photograph a sunset and sometimes you can find some interesting wildlife hanging out there.

The Top of Karon Viewpoint

The Karon Viewpoint is a multi tiered area with a lower garden area surrounded by tropical vegetation and has a large concrete gazebo like structure. At the top (shown above) is a gazebo offering a panoramic view of the ocean and over the city of Karon and Karon / Kata Beach.

This is one of the smaller viewpoints and as a result it also feels like it is the busiest. In tourist season this is one of the places many tour groups will stop on their way back to resorts and hotels to allow the tourists to view a sunset.

At dusk the view out to Karon is quite lovely. If you are handy with a camera and know how to adjust the settings just right you can get some amazing images using the natural light and shadows on the vegetation to your advantage. Otherwise you will notice that there is a high degree of overgrowth up at Karon Viewpoint which along with tourists make it a bit more difficult to capture a great image or even find a nice spot to sit and enjoy natures great evening show.

If you can get a clear view the sunset over the ocean is quite spectacular. The image above was taken with a 10o mm lens and you can still see, even cropped at 16:9 there is still a small amount of tree leaves down the bottom left side. In person your view would be a bit more obstructed which is why Karon Viewpoint is ranked number three of my top five places to view a sunset. Below is a video with the full list of my top 5 favorite places to view a sunset in Phuket.

As shown in the video above there are many great places to view sunsets in Phuket and for different reasons. Even though I only have 5 listed there are so many places along the coast to choose from and even though Karon Viewpoint is in my opinion number three, it still made my list. Again if you want to get a clear photo you are going to want to understand how to use your camera, get a good vantage point before the tourists arrive and more than likely need a lens of up to 200 mm to get a shot of the sunset over the ocean without any branches or leaves in the way.

One of the coolest things you will find at Karon Viewpoint is the wildlife. At least in my opinion, I guess for you that depends on how you feel about large spiders, snakes and big lizards. When you first arrive in the parking lot there is a woman there as well with a large bird of prey. As you can see in the image above a large spider was hanging out in a web above the stairs leading up to the top of Karon Viewpoint. As I stood there and photographed it, unknowing tourists walked under the giant web looking around everywhere but up. I had a lot of fun standing there snapping photos with my camera pointed up in the air. First they would look at me, then at each other and then back at me. That's when I pointed up. There was a memorable Chinese couple that went into total meltdown at the sight of this giant arachnid directly over their heads.

For a fee you can have it climb on you and get a friend to snap some photos. The birds are quite large but if you look at the size of the Thai ladies in the photo above in scale with the guard rail behind them, it is not nearly as enormous as it looks in the photo. I was actually worried about my little friend that day. It the bird kept flapping its wings and I thought surely it would carry her away.

Karon Viewpoint is a great place to visit especially if you have never been. It does not cost anything to go and you will certainly get a perspective on the area that you can not get anywhere else. If you are a capable photographer with basic equipment you should have no trouble pulling off some great photographs if you take your time and get there before the tourists arrive.
