Whether you believe it or not, dreams always have a purpose, and that meaning is invariably directly related to you, your life, your goals, and your anxieties. 

Examine the significance of your dreams to better understand who you are. Attempting to decipher the meaning of your dreams helps you better understand who you are and how to live.

What could your dreams be trying to tell you?

There's no definitive answer, but the theories range from "dreams don't mean anything" to "dreams are more important than our waking existence," explains psychologist and dream expert Rubin Naiman, Ph.D.

The key here, he says, is not to try to interpret the dream literally through its symbols and visuals but rather to feel the emotions it evokes.

Ask yourself: What is this dream bringing up for me emotionally?

A symbol can create a mood or an idea and frequently has a far deeper significance than any one word can convey. 

At the same time, these symbols can leave you perplexed and wondering what and why you were dreaming.

Learning to interpret your dreams is a powerful tool. 

You can learn about your darkest secrets and uncover buried feelings by examining your dreams.

Remember that no one is a better expert than you at interpreting your dreams.

Dream interpretation relies heavily on symbols and objects.

Every aspect, even the slightest detail, in your dream is significant and should be taken into account when studying your dreams. 

Each symbol represents a feeling, mood, memory, or aspect of your unconscious mind.

Examine the people, animals, objects, places, emotions, and even colors and numbers that appear in your dreams. Even the most minor symbol can be meaningful.

How to Recall Your Dreams:

One thing to consider is reducing your alcohol consumption, especially shortly before bed.

Another alternative is to intentionally prolong your morning grogginess by being half-awake and half-asleep.

"Grogginess is a magnificent hybrid state of consciousness," writes Naiman.

"Most people jump into their day when they wake up, immediately pushing the dreamy mind away. To remember dreams, we simply have to linger, without intention […] We're not chasing the dream, we're kind of waiting. It will come." - he continues.

1. Dream Notebook

Keep a notepad and pen nearby so you can readily get them from your bed.

Before you go to sleep, make sure it is open to the next page for you to write on, so that you don't have to seek a blank page when you wake up.

Create your little dream notepad.

2. Alarm

Place your alarm clock near your bed. 

There is no memory that can withstand if you have to get out of bed to turn it off. 

Avoid clock radio alarms, since the ads and the conversation on the morning shows can distract you.

3. Dream Scribe

Concentrate on what is going through your thoughts as soon as you wake up, even before you open your eyes. 

Try to stay in the dream, even if you are already awake and recording the events.

It's okay if you can't remember. Repeat it throughout the day. 

Your mind will eventually comply as you refine your intentions.

When the dream does come back to you as you wake up, even if it's just one thing you can remember, write it down in your dream notepad or make an audio recording of what you recall.

This will help you get into the practice of "bridging the dream into waking life," as Naiman puts it.
