Tipped to be one of Asia's most breathtaking beach holiday destinations, Sri Lanka is as close to paradise as one can get in South Asia. Blessed with a rich cultural heritage and wildlife sanctuaries to match, the island nation offers visitors a wealth of experiences for so small a geographical space. Whether you are heading to Sri Lanka for a business trip or a honeymoon getaway, here are some tips that can help make your stay a seamless and enjoyable experience.

Get Ready to Take Things Slowly

While the roadways and general infrastructure in Sri Lanka are modern and largely well-maintained, it is crucial to adapt to "island time" when spending a holiday in the country. Punctuality is not a virtue among the locals who prefer to take their time and operate according to a less stringent schedule. Getting around can be time-consuming, especially for those who are exploring the hills and the mountainous regions of Sri Lanka as the winding roads and the speed limits make for a meandering journey. It is best to accept the inevitable delays and inefficiency from the outset so as not to let them ruin an otherwise memorable holiday.

Travel during the Right Time of Year

Although Sri Lanka is a year-round vacation hub, those who would rather avoid the rainy days of the year should visit between December and March. This is the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka when hordes of visitors descend on the island to make the most of its stunning beaches and sunny weather conditions. While it may not be the most cost-effective time to head to Sri Lanka, it is the most conducive to a fruitful getaway as the May to November monsoons will not hinder your plans.

Head North or North East to Avoid the Masses

Jaffna and the Northern Province of Sri Lanka is the ideal destination for travellers in search of seclusion away from the holidaying masses. Having been closed to visitors for nearly 30 years due to the civil war, the area is laden with sandy beaches, iconic Hindu temples and a cuisine that is unique from the rest of the island. The northeastern cities of Passikudah and Trincomalee are also perfect for beach fanatics on the lookout for surfing and whale-watching hotspots.

Wine and Dine like a Local

While it may not be listed on most travel brochures, Sri Lanka's local cuisine is among the most underrated culinary schools in the world. A trip to Sri Lanka will allow tourists to indulge in a plethora of local delights whether it's simple rice and curry meals or fusion dishes such as chocolate biscuit pudding, love cake, and Kottu Roti. Hit the streets to find the best local snacks and meals for a fraction of what the items would cost in a restaurant.

Don't Skip Colombo

Ranked among the places to visit in Sri Lanka by travel websites such as Truly Sri Lanka and other online resources, Colombo should earn a place in your itinerary. While some tourists skip the capital in favour of beach hamlets and pastoral villages, the metropolitan capital of Sri Lanka is where the best shopping malls, department stores and bargain markets are found.

Sign Up for a Safari

Sri Lanka's reputation as a wildlife destination may be less publicised than that of its neighbours but the handful of national parks on the island provide excellent opportunities to go on a safari excursion. The Udawalawe National Park and the Yala National Park remain the two finest safari locations in Sri Lanka where elephants, deer, boars, monkeys, reptiles and even leopards are spotted.
