Most people think that Koh Samui is a party destination. While it’s not exactly untrue, there’s more to this beautiful island than just partying. Recent commercial development projects have geared the island for families with kids. So, if you are thinking about a family holiday but don’t quite know where to go, you should consider Koh Samui. Here’s everything you need to know about enjoying a family holiday on this gorgeous Thai island.

The beaches

You’ll find a selection of family villas in Koh Samui located close to the beach because beaches are among the main attractions of the island. Samui beaches are a heavenly gift, to say the least. These picture-perfect beaches are everything you need on your family holiday. Swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing are some of the activities these beaches are known for.

Some of the beaches you should visit as a family are:

  • Coral Cove Beach
  • Maenam Beach
  • Thongson Bay Beach
  • Lipa Noi Beach
  • Silver Beach

All these beaches feature a kid-friendly setup where they can run around and have fun – under parental supervision, of course.

Try local dishes

Staying at a place like Santiburi Koh Samui? You should definitely try some local dishes. Thai dishes are known the world over for being absolutely eye-catching and delicious. So, here are some of the must-try local dishes; you can get your kids to try these as well:

  • Pad Thai
  • Tom Yum soup – request the spice levels to be reduced if your kids want to try this
  • Kalamae
  • Khao Pad
  • Som Tam
  • Seafood dishes
  • Satay
  • Massaman Curry
  • Mango Sticky Rice – your kids will love this!
  • Tom Kha Kai
  • Kai Phad Med Ma Muang

Keep in mind that some Thai dishes are super spicy, so always check with the hotel or the restaurant before ordering something.

Get a spa treatment

Spa treatments are not just for couples; families can enjoy them too. Your kids will love a bit of pampering, so get them a spa treatment while you are here. And don’t forget to get one for yourself. A relaxing spa treatment is all you need on a hot Samui day!

Choose the right time to visit

Koh Samui has two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

For sunshine and warm weather, you should visit from December to February. This is also the high season, which means that everything is expensive; accommodation, in particular, is extremely pricey during this time.

If you are on a budget and don’t mind a bit of rain, you should visit during the rainy season, which spans from September to November. Resorts and hotels offer great deals during this time, and you won’t see many see tourists on the island.

March to August really isn’t a good time to visit; temperatures shot up to 30 degrees. If you are travelling with kids, you really should avoid this time.

Learn to cook

You should take a cooking class, especially if you love Thai food. There are numerous cooking classes, and some of them are:

  • Tamarind Tree Cooking School
  • InFusion Cooking Classes
  • Island Organics
  • Lamai Thai Cooking School
  • Pai Cookery Class
  • Samui Institute of Thai Culinary Arts
  • There are also private cooking classes.
  • Explore the walking streets

To get a feel of the local life and for a great family experience, visit the walking streets. These streets are found all over the island at various locations and are held in the evening.

Add the following walking streets to your list of places to visit in Koh Samui:

  • Mae Nam Walking Street
  • Fisherman’s Village Walking Street
  • Nathon Walking Street
  • Chaweng Walking Street
  • Visit cultural attractions

Thailand is steeped in culture, history, and tradition, and Koh Samui has some of the best cultural attractions in the country.

If you have time, you should consider visiting the following:

  • Big Buddha
  • Wat Plai Laem
  • Secret Buddha Garden
  • Dusit Dhewa
