It is always challenging to get around the city centre as a visitor or a commuter in Abu Dhabi. This article aims to highlights some things to keep in mind. Whether you'd like to make your way across Abu Dhabi as a visitor or live your life here, there are many possibilities to get around the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

By Car

Many who plan to discover the Emirate of Abu Dhabi via private car will be able to choose from a vast variety of rental companies who offer a wide array of sizes and models. The bulk of big corporations have headquarters at major hotels and airports. Many car rental offices are also located all over Abu Dhabi Area. You can easily get around if you book accommodation at convenient locations. For instance, you can check out 5-star hotels in Abu Dhabi the likes of Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara.

For both private and rental vehicles, obtaining a valid driving license is mandatory. International travellers require a visa, a credit card and an overseas driving license to rent vehicles. You may receive an Overseas License from the AA or RAC if you are coming from the UK. UAE citizens must have a valid UAE driving license to drive vehicles and rental cars.

By Taxi

Taxis in Abu Dhabi are a very prevalent and convenient mode of transport that is also fairly affordable compared to other nations. The taxi fleet in this city is considerable. Everywhere you go you will be able to flag a taxi - as long as it is legal and safe for drivers to stop. There are dedicated taxi stations at most of the Abu Dhabi shopping malls.

Most taxi drivers are acquainted with tourist attractions, such as restaurants, shopping malls, recreation areas, instead of road names. But if the driver doesn't know where to find these places, it's often a smart option for you to have some idea of the desired location. Taxis prices are greater during the nights (10:00 PM - 6:00 AM) as taxis do not take credit cards, you should always pay cash. Even though tips really aren't compulsory, a small tip will be appreciated by the driver.

By Bus

In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has a public transport facility with air-conditioning and disability-accessible buses. These run in the suburbs of this City, Al Ain and Madinat Zayed. This bus service operates every day on Abu Dhabi Island as well as the suburbs between 5:00 AM and midnight throughout the week and till 2:00 AM during the weekends. Different fares make public transit affordable and convenient. The fare for trips to Abu Dhabi City is AED 1, which must be bought at the entrance of the bus. Ojra Bus Passes can be bought by regular travellers from any Red Crescent kiosk on Abu Dhabi Island. The styles of bus passes provided by Ojra are:

• One-time Ticket

• Monthly Pass

• Special Needs

• Senior Citizen

Transport to and from the Airport

This will take about 40 minutes by car from the Abu Dhabi International Airport to reach the city. The airport contains numerous car rental offices and provides several parking options, like valet parking. You can choose either buses, taxis or Etihad shuttle services for travellers that don't want to travel by themselves. If you would like to hire limousines or metered taxis, just head to the pick-up stand at the airport! There are plenty of those to hop into! The limousines operate within set rates. So, make sure you are okay with the price before you hop on!
