They say getting around in the Maldives is not as easy as you think it would seem! But, is this really true? In this country which is almost covered by the sea, there are many modes of transportation that you can try out, but each of them can have their pros and cons. Picking out what's best for you and your occasion is totally up to you!

Ferries

The Maldives is a country that's composed of thousands of islands. So, commuting between these islands is something that almost every local gets to do daily and they do this by means of ferries. Ferries are the cheapest mode of transportation in the Maldives, and of course, are the most popular as well. Ferries operate from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm, but the issue is that they don't operate on Fridays. For a budget traveller, this could be the best option to save some money, but you have to expect some delays in schedules if you opt for this. Another thing to note is that they don't stop at resort islands.

Speedboats

Most of the Maldives holiday resorts the likes of Adaaran Maldives have airport transfers included in some of their packages, and if they do, you don't need to worry about finding your mode of transportation as soon as you land in the Maldives. But, if it doesn't, one of the most effective ways to reach your hotel is to catch a speed boat. Unlike ferries, they are highly reliable, but on the other hand, they can be quite expensive too. Do you know what can be done if you can't afford a speedboat? You can then simply ask a local fisherman to give you a lift on his boat, as they do offer it too!

Seaplanes

If your budget permits, this is so far the best and the most convenient way to explore the Maldives. Yes, that means it's an expensive mode of transportation, which sometimes can go high up to even MVR 7000, but it's totally worth it at least once in your lifetime. They fly at low altitudes, so this makes you have a splendid birds eye's view of the islands and reefs of the country. By this mode, reaching even the furthest island from Male (the capital island) is just a journey of 90 minutes.

Taxis

You may be wondering why taxis are needed when this country is all about sea and air transportation. But do not forget about Male and Addu where road transportation is popular. These cities do have an efficient taxi service and they provide safe and comfortable rides to tourists and locals alike. In the Maldives, sharing cab spaces is a common thing, and it is advised to not panic if a cab that has one or two other passengers stops by to pick up you too! This is quite a common practice in the Maldives – so do not be alarmed! There are many taxi services such as Dialacab, Loyal Taxi, and New Taxi to serve you when you are in the Maldives.

Busses

If you want to travel to Hulhulmale from any of the airports in the Maldives, you can easily choose a shuttle bus to take you there, and this will only cost you an amount like MVR 20. This bus service is operated by the MTCC (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company), but they only have specific routes. On rainy days, busses are going to be very crowded and if you have a lot of luggage with you, it is often better if you could take a taxi to get to your desired location.
