The mention of the phrase ‘Maldives’ brings with it scenes of turquoise waters, palm-shaded islands and absorbing encounters that can be had, both on land and out on the sea. Cutting a long story, the Maldivian archipelago with its 1,000-odd islets is just the break you need away from life’s rigours. Outlined below is a 7-day guide on how to comb all corners of this magnificent part of the world.

Day 1

Upon landing and clearing immigration, commence adventuring on Hulhumale Island which is one of the islands that can be accessed via road. In terms of getting around, a two-wheeler can be rented that will have you well on your way towards uncovering the pleasures of the island that involve visiting the local beach for a quiet soak.

Day 2

Reserve day 2 of your Maldivian holiday for a trip to Maafushi while passing through Male City for a short encounter with local markets and a casual stroll or two. Take the boat from Hulhumale to Male which leaves every 30 minutes and upon reaching this section of the island nation, makes a dash for the Grand Friday Mosque where you may inspect its grandeur before calling by Villingili Ferry Terminal. Expect a 2-hour ferry trip before you arrive at one of the biggest islands in the Maldives which is found some 27 km away from Male.

Day 3

Maafushi Island is breathtaking in every sense of the word which is why you should devote one entire day to covering its breadth and scope. For starters, Bikini Beach is perfect for sporting swimwear you’ve only thought of wearing out here in the tropics while the more subdued public beaches would coax you into unwinding in the company of azure waters and shimmering shores. For diehard fans of the outdoors, Maafushi’s dive centres would serve as a prelude to exploring every inch of the ocean floor and its colourful inhabitants. While average diving expeditions cost around USD 35, one can also toy with the idea of going kayaking, jet skiing or snorkelling at Vilivaru Corner.

Day 4

When in the Maldives, resort rooms and suites such as those on offer at Hard Rock Hotel Maldives will be the perfect complement to the next chapter of your island escape. Located in Emboodhoo Lagoon which is easily accessible via speedboat transfer from Maafushi Island, guests staying here can expect to be dazzled by the area’s inviting dining and retail culture. The Marine Discovery Centre found nearby paves the way for visitors to partake in a coral propagation programme that features as part of a conservation initiative that continues to work towards preserving the ecosystem of the Maldives.

Day 5

Once back at Maafushi, you can then begin chartering a course for the farthest island in the South Male Atoll which is Fihalhohi. Reputed for its overwater bungalow living and thoughtful hospitality which warrants giving yourself over to a heavenly spa therapy, Fihalhohi spells exotic with a capital ‘E’ in no uncertain manner.

Day 6

Measuring a mere 675 metres by 200 metres, Fulidhoo is one of the smaller islands that you will have the fortune of being on, regardless of whether you choose to come over for the day or stay overnight. The services of the public ferry or speedboat can be availed to reach Fulidhoo Island with the former known to operate from Male with a pit-stop at Maafushi. The Island’s main beach is a beautiful expanse bathed in allures and charms which are part and parcel of the Maldives. In fact, the daring adventurer can look forward to snorkelling, diving or even kayaking within the warm lagoon waters. In the event you decide to remain here for more than a day, then the Island’s guest houses can be sought that will take care of your every whim.

Day 7

From Fulidhoo, take steps to arrive on Maafushi Island from where you can get your belongings and depart for Male. The nation’s capital contains its fair share of tourist hotspots that are equally inviting as they are historic. For example, the National Museum will beckon all history buffs to pour over every minute detail and exhibit that capture the early times of the country. Once done, you may move over to the green gardens of Sultan’s Park to catch your breath and prepare for the journey back home.
