If you are looking for more than just spending lazy days at the beach in Hua Hin, Thailand, then plan a visit to the Pa La-U Waterfall. An ideal place to explore for nature lovers and those in search of some outdoor adventure, this waterfall is known for its 16 levels that create a truly enchanting spectacle amidst the forest. Here is a guide to help you plan a trip and experience the best of one of the most idyllic natural attractions in Hua Hin.

Consider When to Visit

While Pa La-U Waterfall is usually open the whole year through, do keep in mind some periods are better than others to fully experience its beauty. As with many falls around the world, the rainy season is the best time to enjoy the full flow when the water levels will be at their peak. May to October is generally the rainy season here with September and October normally having a lot of rainfall.

However, if there is too much rain and conditions are bad you may not be able to access the falls at all so always check before a visit. You could still enjoy the waterfall in the dry season though it may not be as impressive towards the latter part of the season around March and April.

Plan Your Excursion

This waterfall is located in the Kaeng Krachan National Park which can be found near the border with Myanmar and is around 60 km from Hua Hin; it can take around a 1.5-hour drive to get there. The park which is one of the largest in the country features diverse flora and fauna which makes it an ideal place to explore in its own right.

The journey to the Pa La-U Waterfall on excursions from local properties such as Anantara Hua Hin Resort is part of the adventure; on your way, you will pass lovely landscapes of picturesque hills and the rustic countryside set amidst mountain backdrops. The waterfall is generally open from 8:30am to 4:30pm; you can look to get there early during the peak tourist season to avoid the crowds and the heat.

Explore the Levels

The Pa La-U Waterfall has 16 levels in total, with each level ascending higher up; of course, the accessibility of the levels closer to the top can vary and they are not always open to being explored; if you have a guide or are joining a group tour, check with them beforehand. Generally, the first five levels of the falls can be visited on a trek which is one of the most captivating things to do in Hua Hin, Thailand. Do keep in mind the higher up you go the harder it becomes.

Reaching level one is relatively easy, though subsequent levels may not be for very small children or those with walking difficulties. Hiking to level five can take around 45 minutes depending on your fitness levels and it will involve traversing along a river and climbing over rocks in some places too. If it has rained or is raining when you visit, the trail will be slippery and with this in mind, do remember to wear a sturdy pair of shoes / boots. One of the highlights would be to have a dip in the refreshing water at the base of each level. Some of these natural pools are full of fish which will swim around you too!

As part of the experience, you may also witness the wildlife that inhabits the Kaeng Krachan National Park from colourful butterflies and birds to gibbons in the trees. The Pa La-U Waterfall offers a perfect escape amidst the serenity and tranquillity of an ancient forest.
