Located on the southernmost region of Australia on the Tasmanian island, Hobart is one of the most overlooked destinations in the whole of the nation with many interesting and unique attractions. Most tourists who visit down under make the famous hotspots of Sydney, Brisbane and Uluru as their primary destination and ignore this wonderful capital. But people who look to breathe some of the world's cleanest air, enjoy some of the finest natural landscapes and are tempted to spend time under the warm weather of the Southern Hemisphere, visit the incredible city of Hobart. It is an ideal destination to visit with family and friends – here are a few fun activities to keep in mind on your next visit!

Impressive Family-friendly Cruises

The city of Hobart has an impressive setting between the splendid Derwent River and the mountains. The central passages which link the river, city and the mountains consist of enchanting wilderness and landscapes which are some of the must-see sights of the area. A great way for families to spend a relaxing time here is to board a Peppermint Bay cruise which is a favourite attraction in these parts as they offer picturesque views of the mesmerising flora and fauna that thrive here, overlooking the d'Entrecasteaux Channel. This custom-built cruise has become a crowd-favourite among tourists and locals alike as it is an opportunity to learn about the surrounding sights after which you get to feast on a lip-smacking three course lunch menu. Another equally-exciting option for you and your companions is a tour on the Bruny Island cruises, which is also a soothing experience with an amiable crew and friendly service. Enjoy the scenic vistas of Bruny Island, don't forget to bring your cameras and if you're lucky you can watch the sun fade away into the horizon, an unmissable experience in Hobart.

Be Mesmerised at MONA

Visiting a heritage-rich city like Hobart calls for a trip to its local museum or art galleries and MONA (The Museum of Old and New Art) is the right place for it. It is Australia’s biggest privately owned museum and is one of the most eye-catching museums ever. With its confronting, controversial and intriguing art displays you are forced to go back again and again. The variation going on around here is tremendous, from stories of random strangers shared through images and texts to exhibits involving a lot of arm chairs and old television sets. Even the place you sit is a work of art with some of them moving and making sounds underneath you like a weird animal! Here there are no signs explaining the art forms like what you see in a regular museum, instead each visitor is given an iPad-like device that tells you about the nearby arts, in which you can select to further learn more about the piece. You can also view some of the interviews with the artists in discussion. The little ones are sure to have an enormous amount of fun here!

Feed a Trout at Salmon Ponds

Derwent Valley is known to house some of the beautiful natural sceneries on the land and one of them is the historic Salmon Ponds and Trout Hatchery. It is an ultimate getaway located approximately 45-minutes away from the city offering a calm and tranquil setting with gardens and ponds, perfect for picnics and walks. Trouts are farmed everyday and you can see and feed them by visiting the beautiful grounds and the Museum of Trout Fishing. It is an underrated attraction but the beautiful setting is perfect for an outing with kids as they can stroll around feeding different fishes and learn about each stage of their life cycle. If lucky they might even get a chance to spot a platypus in the wild!
