When you think of Tasmania, you might be taken back in time to the Looney Tunes cartoon Tasmanian Devil running on television. The quirky character is quite contrary to the real-life animal which is currently on the list of endangered species. What many don’t realise is that there is more to Tasmania than what meets the eye!

Being the smallest Australian state located in the southern part of the country, it is known as the island state of Australia. It’s capital, Hobart, the least populated state capital city is known for being the first Australian city to have a casino. The city is also home to the spectacular Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and the infamous Mount Wellington. A very popular activity that people take up while in the city are the popular Hobart lunch cruises. Hobart is also the second oldest capital city after Sydney. For all history lovers, this is the prime location to be! Filled with ghost towns and colonial ecclesiastical architecture, explore the major spots and get to learn about the places and the history that comes with it by joining for the Hobart historic cruises with live commentary.

The main island of Tasmania was initially inhabited by Aboriginal peoples for 40,000 years before British colonisation. Located in the south of the Australian mainland, it is separated by Bass Strait. It is also the smallest of the Australian states.

Upon hearing “ghost town”, one might imagine it being a movie set but in Tasmania it is not the same. It is a town where people once used to reside but is currently a shadow of its past. From the remote locations, to the very little remains, ghost towns are a popular tourist attraction. Most ghost towns found here are former mining settlements.

When in Hobart, don’t forget to schedule a visit to Bonorong Wildlife sanctuary. Opt for a day time visit or one of the exciting nighttime experiences. Apart from the experiences, there is a nice gift shop to check out as well as a plant-based food hut. This is also the perfect spot to plan a picnic with friends and family. There is also the option of using the BBQ area and having a fun day at the sanctuary!

Hobart is where MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art, Australia’s largest private museum, is located. It has been described as a “subversive adult Disneyland” which houses modern, ancient and many types of art from the David Walsh collection. Mona was opened in 2011 and is known for hosting its annual Mona Foma and Dark Mofo which are both annual music and arts festivals held in Tasmania. Though located in a small city, it is a major tourist attraction and highly recommended being the southern hemisphere’s largest private museum.

For a calm and quiet day out head over to the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Being the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia, this was built on land which was first occupied by the Muwinina people. There have even been archaeological discoveries dating back more than 5,000 years. This botanical garden is home to a large number of significant plant and tree collections dating back to the nineteenth century. You can also spot Australia’s only Subantarctic Plant House. With a whopping 14 hectares to explore, relax and explore. Choose a tailored walk based on personal interests or go for a 50-minute walking tour.

When in Tasmania there is no need to worry about having nothing to do. There is a never ending list of activities and places to visit in this island state!
