Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your itinerary if you ever visit the Tassie gem of Launceston.

Tasmania’s second largest and major city might not be on the map as much as Australia’s other stellar cities on the mainland, but it certainly deserves not to be overlooked. This riverside city with a population of just over 66,000, is teeming with world-class culture, gorgeous sights, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

Launnie was one of our vacation spots in 2022, and we absolutely killed it during our time here! If you ever feel like taking that scenic car drive from Hobart or a Qantas flight from Melbourne, here’s a quick lowdown to help you plan what to do in Launceston.

Tamar River cruises

If iconic attractions are what you're after, don’t look past the scenic Cataract Gorge cruise! Cataract Gorge is probably the number one attraction that serves as a beacon for tourists who fly in from other Aussie states or capitals. This steep-sided river canyon is minutes away from the city centre and the best way to admire its elegant beauty is from a river cruise.

As you glide along the Tamar River, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the cliffs that stand tall above the gorge, the lush vegetation, and the panoramic landscapes, all in the comfort of your cruise.

We opted for the premium luncheon cruise which also has quite the reputation around these parts, offering epic views of the Batman Bridge, Tamar Valley and other scenic riverside attractions. We also got to sample fine Tassie wines and beers which were also included along with the light lunch and cheese & fruit platter. It’s an easy contender for top Tamar cruises in Launceston!

Penguin watching tour

Tasmania is home to the smallest species of penguins in the world, the fairy or the little penguins, and you can get up close and personal with them with a penguin watching tour (without disturbing them, of course). The tour starts late afternoon as the sun begins to set, casting a warm golden light over the water.

You'll be greeted by a chorus of penguin calls, an unforgettable sound that sets the mood for a magical experience. The penguins come to shore at dusk to return to their burrows after a day at sea, and the tour provides an incredible opportunity to observe this spectacle, without getting in their way.

Zip-lining at Hollybank

Take adventure to new heights with a zip-lining experience in Launceston’s very own Hollybank. Adventure is synonymous with Tasmania, and this is evident in every corner of this island state. Only just 20 minutes away from the CBD, the Hollybank Wilderness Adventures is the special curator of exciting tree-top adventures including zip-lining, segway tours, mountain biking, tree lines and more!

When we realised they have one of the longest ziplines in the nation, there was only one choice to be made! It was fun yet a bit challenging! We took to the skies and soared through the rainforest, gliding from platform to platform and soaking in the stunning forest scenery. The course’s design is exceptional with various obstacles in between, including bridges, tight ropes and zip-lines of different lengths and speed.

Saturday Harvest Markets

Perhaps the most important thing Launceston is famous for is its weekend market. It is a cornerstone of their community but a great experience for us visitors. While the odds of you shopping for fresh harvests might be lower, you can still head out and sample some of their finest homegrown flavours. Exclusively open only on Saturdays with over 80 stalls, here the people who are selling the food are the ones who have grown them! Don’t hold back on tasting!
