Located in Southern Europe, this boot-like country is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for many reasons including art treasures, high fashion, spectacular places, people with a passion for high-end food. Italy offers a lot to see and do that can take a lifetime to explore. Here are some of the best places to visit in Italy.

Number 10. Naples

One of the busiest cities in the country, Naples is the capital of the Campania region of Southern Italy. The city of Naples offers heritage works of art and historical sites as well as a beautiful shopping area, restaurants, and nightclubs. Many favorite Italian dishes appear here as pizza, spaghetti, and parmigiana. These dishes are taken seriously in Naples and often include new, locally grown ingredients. As famous nearby places like the Bay of Naples and Pompeii, Naples offers a great place to stay while exploring the area.

Number 9. Italian Sea Region

The Italian Oceans region runs through Northern Italy. The southern ends of most of the lakes are flat but relatively north-facing with mountains as the lakes reach the depths of the Alps. Famous for tourists for over a century, the Italian Oceans combine beautiful climates with fascinating landscapes. Garda is the largest lake, and offers stunning scenery, especially in its northern highlands. Como is equally impressive, with a sloping slope straight from the water's edge. In addition to the west, Maggiore is less popular but more beautiful, with more family vacations.

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily, is an Italian archipelago that includes several small islands. It is separated from the rural province of Calabria by 2 miles of the Straits of Messina. Home to all major Mediterranean civilizations, Sicily is rich in art and history; from Agrigento's Valley of the Temple to the Baroque churches of Palermo. The most striking feature of the landscape is Mount Etna, Europe's tallest volcano.

Number 7. Cinque Terre

Meaning “Five Countries,” Cinque Terre has five districts of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Monterosso and Corniglia. Located in the region off the northwest coast of Italy of Liguria, the villages of Cinque Terre include some of the country's most beautiful landscapes, including the cliffs and wineries dating back centuries. Among its many gemstones, Cinque Terre has years of acute mountain climbing acres that offer a magnificent view of the Italian coastline. Blue Trail is a paved road that covers all five villages and is suitable for all ages.

Number 6. Milan

Almost destroyed in a massive bomb blast during WWII, Milan has since rebuilt and now shines as one of the richest cities in Europe. Widely regarded as a mega fashion center full of designer shops, Milan also attracts many of its world-class brands such as Leonardo da Vinci's painting, The Last Supper, La Scala Opera House, Castello Sforzesco, and one of the world's largest Gothic temples. However, Milan sometimes seems a little Italian compared to the country's most historic cities and much of the beautiful city of modern art.

Situated in the southwestern area of Italy in Campania, the Amalfi Coast is known for its special magnificence that makes it extraordinary compared to other vacationer locations in Italy. Located 30 miles south of the Sorrento Peninsula, the Amalfi coast is fascinated by its picturesque coastline with glistening harbors, rocky cliffs, lemon gardens, colorful houses, and tourist attractions. One of the most popular and beautiful cities along the Amalfi Coast is Positano with its beautiful stone beaches, pastel houses, and beautiful mountains. One of the largest cities, Amalfi, has popular plazas full of restaurants while the city of Ravello is popular for its beautiful gardens and works of art.

Number 4. Pompeii

One of the most visited places in Italy is Pompeii, a famous Roman city buried beneath several feet [1 m] of volcanic ash about 1,700 years after the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Excavations in Pompeii began in 1748, and the site is yet to be fully opened. The site is near the modern city of Naples. A visit to Pompeii provides an interesting insight into the daily life of the ancient Roman world. Visitors can take to the streets of ancient times to see the remains of bakeries, brothels, and baths.

Number 3. Venice

One of the most beautiful places in Europe, Venice is a city unique in its architecture surrounded by the Adriatic sea. Located in northeastern Italy, Venice is the archipelago of 118 islands, connected by hundreds of magnificent bridges and canals. In the canals, the Grand Canal is very popular and divides the city into two parts. The magnificent waterways and historic buildings make Venice one of the world's most beloved cities. Venice is often crowded but it is worth a visit to see its beautiful landmarks like Saint Mark's Square and Basilica, Doge's Palace, and Rialto Bridge. One of the most popular things to do is take a gondola ride through one of its many canals.

The most famous region in Italy, Tuscany is composed of beautiful rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, and cypress trees. Much of Tuscany's excitement includes tasting wine in Chianti, simply relaxing in mountainous cities like San Gimignano, or exploring Renaissance art in Florence. The ancient city of Siena has excellent works of art while its historic center is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy. Elba, the largest of the many islands of Tuscan, offers beautiful beaches while Pisa is known the world over for its Leaning Tower.

Formerly the capital of the Roman Empire, Rome is now the seat of government and the capital of Italy. Located in the central region of Lazio, Rome is a large and complex city that is historic and modern at the same time. Best known for its ancient Roman palaces and the Vatican City, Rome has endured for over 2,500 years as an important cultural, powerful, and religious center. From ancient love farms to amazing bishops and Renaissance buildings, there is so much you can see and do in Rome, which can take months or even years to see it all.
