Are you travelling to Munich during winter, and you wonder if you picked a good month? Don’t worry you have made the right choice. Winter in Munich is exceptional, a picture- perfect European city with snow-clad mountains and charming red roofs of the old town donned in fairytale white all around. There are plenty of reasons to travel to Munich during the winter season: from cultural events to fantastic concerts and many outdoor activities. However, one of the biggest reasons to travel to Munich are the Christmas Markets, so pack your warm clothes and Los Gehts!

Established in the medieval times dating back to the 14th century, the Christmas markets of Munich are not only the best but also the oldest in the region. Originally called Nikolausmarkt and renamed as Christkindlmarkt in the 19th century, these Christmas Markets are known to melt the heart of the biggest Grinch with a warm & jolly Christmas spirit!

There are over 35 Christmas Markets in Munich which are nestled in many diverse places to visit, from the classic and traditional to the quirky and unconventional. Here’s a list of some of the best Christmas markets in Munich:

Munich Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz Square

Considered as the king of all Christmas Markets because of its central location in Munich’s Old Town, this market is popular for many reasons: stall after stall of traditional handmade crafts, mouth-watering festive delicacies, and the all-too-romantic backdrop of the Neues Rathaus. This year the Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is scheduled to take place from 21 November to 24 December 2022.

Christmas Village in the Kaiserhof of the Residenz (city palace)

The Christmas Village is located in the largest courtyard of Munich’s city palace, the Residenz. It’s nestled away from the cold wind, and as far as magic goes it’s a little tough to beat a Christmas Market located in the royal palace. This small market has a cozy assortment of different vendors selling traditional craft items, ornaments, snacks, and puppet shows about the Hansel and Gretel fairytale which light up the eyes of young and old alike. Visit this market between 17 November to 23 December 2022.

Christkindlmarkt am Sendlinger Tor (gate)

This Christmas market is said to have first taken place on the grounds in front of Sendlinger Tor as early as 1886. More than 130 years later, this tradition continues to enchant residents and tourist alike. While the market is smaller than the others, it has a buzzing vibe to it, especially in the evenings. The Sendlinger Tor, one of the three remaining city gates of Munich's former fortifications, is lit aglow and invites visitors to take a leisurely stroll around the gate. It’s the perfect place to shop for gifts for your loved ones. Choose from a wide range of vendors selling unique Bavarian products such as extravagant Christmas tree baubles, hand-drawn candles, scented oils, ceramics, jewellery, and much more. A daily changing programme with Christmas music puts visitors of all ages in the mood for the festive season. Be part of this traditional Christmas Market from 21 November to 23 December 2022.

Munich is home to more than 10 Christmas Markets which fill your heart with joy and resemble a picture-perfect postcard (which means the perfect clicks to add to your Instagram page because if we’re honest, we really do live by the ‘gram, don’t we?). The Munich Christmas Market scene is a delightful tour you must embark upon during your winter holiday in Germany, with countless activities all around the city.
