Sometimes the best places to explore can be found in your own backyard. The Canadian province of Ontario has a number of breathtaking historical sites, artistic collections, and natural landscapes that are worth taking a day to enjoy with your friends or family this summer.

Westfield Heritage Village

Experience a day in the life of someone living in the 19th century at the Westfield Heritage Village. Located in Rockton and comprising over 130 hectares, the Westfield Heritage Village includes over 35 restored historical buildings that come fully-staffed with educators in period-appropriate clothing. Demonstrations and interactive displays take place throughout the spring and summer months and include traditional maple syrup production, ice cream festivals, and textiles days.

Royal Ontario Museum

Sitting in the heart of Toronto, the ROM houses some of Canada's most interesting historical artifacts and educational exhibits. Currently displaying exhibits on the Norse vikings, fashion designer Christian Dior, ancient Egypt, and the dinosaurs, the ROM offers an impressive and constantly-changing array of stunning historical artifacts. National Gallery of Canada

Located within an arm's reach of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, the National Gallery of Canada houses the nation's most impressive and expansive collection of sculptures, paintings, drawings, and photographs. The gallery features pieces from both Canadian and Indigenous artists as well as a number of renowned European artists as well. Even if unfamiliar with the artists whose work is featured, one will not find it hard to appreciate and enjoy the large display of Canadian art and culture present in the gallery.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

This picturesque town nestled into the banks of Lake Ontario makes for a scenic weekend getaway. With a number of beautiful green areas as well as a number of quaint shops and restaurants, this small town is a great place to explore. For those interested in military history, the Fort George National Historic Site is not far away and features a spectacular view over the Niagara River as well as tours and living history demonstrations.

Art Gallery of Ontario

If Ottawa is too far for you to drive to get your art fix, the Art Gallery of Ontario, located in Toronto, is also a great place to visit. Featuring an expansive historical and contemporary collection of art as well as a number of more interactive workshops and exhibits, the Art Gallery of Ontario makes a perfect day trip. For those interested in the art of food, the Art Gallery of Ontario also features an in-house bistro that serves up dishes made with fresh local ingredients that are inspired by the gallery's exhibits.

Algonquin Provincial Park

Located in Southeastern Ontario, Algonquin National Park is home to some of Canada's most beautiful natural landscapes. The park features an array of wildlife, rivers, and forests. For those interested in learning more about the rich history of the region, the Algonquin Logging Museum, nestled in amongst the trees, is a great educational space to explore. Whether you go to camp, hike, canoe, or learn, you'll find yourself amongst a thriving natural environment teaming with wildlife and picturesque views.

Stratford Festival

The Stratford Festival, running from April to October of each year, is the place to be for all who enjoy live theatrical productions. Featuring a number of Shakespeare plays as well wide selection of other productions including The Rocky Horror Show, To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Comedy of Errors, the Stratford Festival is a great way to spend a night out with friends or family.
