Canadians often look to the United States as a country of opportunity and warmer temperatures. It shouldn’t be surprising that of the 9% of Canada’s citizens living abroad, the majority of them make their new home in the U.S. The most common reasons Canadians make the move south are for work, higher education, the climate and love. Whatever reason might have for considering the move, there are several important factors you need to plan for in your move, from where you will live to the process of making the move.

1. Get Legal Permission

Getting permission from immigration is the first step to residency in the United States. There are many parts to this step and it can be tricky and confusing. However, it can be done by first finding a sponsor for your move, whether it comes from your employer or a family member.

You can get a company visa which will allow you to reside here temporarily for work, or if you’re entrepreneurial, you could be granted a visa by starting a business or investing in an existing U.S. business. The last avenue to receiving immigration’s stamp of approval is through family sponsorship from a relative already residing in the U.S. or if you’ve found love, through marrying a U.S. citizen.

2. Find a Home

Canada can be downright cold. The United States offers Canadians vast amounts of sunshine and diverse weather patterns. Recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that Canadian immigrants favor tropical climates such as those of California or Florida. In 2016, there were approximately 55,000 Canadian citizens making their home in the “Sunshine State.” With its sandy beaches and rare freezing temperatures, it’s no wonder people from the colder north would want to find their new home in Florida.

As for housing, you might want to rent until you find a neighborhood that makes you feel at home. In the United States, Canadian citizens can also purchase real estate. Lenders in the U.S. will be able to use your credit already established in Canada to offer you a loan.

3. Hire a Reputable Moving Company

You’ll want to hire a professional mover, such as Miami Movers, who know the ins and outs of custom’s requirements, such as documentation, proof of eligibility and identification. It’s important that you physically be in the United States when your possessions cross the border. A reputable mover will have the knowledge to work with you and ensure your move goes as smoothly and effortlessly as possible on your end.

4. Get Your Pets Vaccinated

In order for Fluffy or Felix to come across the border you will need to have proof of a current rabies vaccination. The vaccination must have taken place in the last 30 days. Also, have your veterinarian provide you with a certificate verifying the health of your pet. Dogs and cats are fairly painless to travel with to the U.S., but if you have a bird, keep in mind that it will need to be quarantined for 30 days upon arrival. Exotic animals will have different requirements, so be sure you know everything that will be needed so there are no unexpected surprises.

5. Get the American Version of Everything You Had in Canada

Once you’re here, you’ll be busy for a while creating your new life. One of the first things you’ll want to do is convert your currency and apply for a bank account. You’ll need a U.S. wireless provider and car insurance. Most importantly, you’ll need to acquire health insurance. Unlike Canada, the United States government does not provide universal health coverage.

Moving to the United States is exciting and it takes some important steps and groundwork to get where you want to be. By being knowledgeable and prepared the transition will be less stressful and you’ll start off with a solid foundation. Imagine when walking the white, sandy beaches of Florida will no longer be a dream, but a beautiful reality.
