These splendid waterways offer a great change of scenery and refreshing break from the city smoke. So without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Gordon River

This list is not curated in any order, but if it was, I’m sure this mighty river would still stay on top. Gordon River is one of nature’s greatest blessings in the form of a 172 km long, fresh, ‘weak-tea’ coloured water body. Gordon river cruises depart daily from Strahan offering any adventure seekers the chance to experience the splendidness of this river in all its glory. The river is defined by the massive, rugged gorges and intricate landscapes which are often reflected picture-perfectly on the water! The dense rainforests in the riverside adds a touch of mystery and a serenity to the charm of the river.

Since it is part of the Tasmanian World-Heritage Wilderness Area, the river will thankfully remain preserved and pristine for years to come. World Heritage cruises located in Strahan is known to offer complete sightseeing tours of the river – if you’re ever in town you know where to go.

Noosa River

The mouth of Noosa River is on the Great Sandy National Park and is home to major lakes and tributaries. The impressive waterways here offer something for everyone – from fishing and boating to hiking and swimming. The locals and tourists here spend a lot of time lazing around the river on cruises, or taking part in water sports. And let’s not forget the magical scenery that surrounds the river including national parks, beaches and forests! Adding to this, the canal located off the river is home to the area’s most luxurious homes.

Ord River

The Ord River is the perfect choice for those looking for something a bit more remote. This 320 km long river is located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and flows through some of the country’s most rugged landscapes including the Bungle bungle range and Purnululu National Park. It is the centre for the Ord River Irrigation Scheme started in the 1960s, which gave birth to the incredible Lake Argyle and 14,000 hectares of agricultural land! And when you cruise down this magical river, be sure to be on the lookout for a diverse array of wildlife including freshwater crocodiles and a variety of bird species!

Murray River

Now, here’s a river with culture. This list can’t be complete without mentioning the longest river in Australia – flowing for 2,520kms through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The third longest navigable river behind the Nile and Amazon, Murray is home to four dams, 16 storage weirs, and over 37 golf courses along its banks! If you’re looking for a river with a bit of history, Murray is your go-to. The river played a crucial role in the country’s early exploration and settlement and is dotted with quaint towns and major historic landmarks.

Swan River

Swan River is more than just a body of water winding its way through Perth, it’s a way of life. This exquisite river is a popular spot for water activities like boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and it’s of no wonder why – the breathtaking views of the city skyline and natural scenery is unmatched. And even if you don’t feel like being on the waters, there are plenty of activities on land. Stroll along the walking trails that follow the river, enjoy a picnic with your beloved ones, or even hop on a cruise and enjoy a unique on-water perspective of the city and its surroundings.
