As the springtime temperatures quickly rise, why not beat the heat with a crisp onshore breeze from Lake Michigan? Whether you’re looking for a relaxing summer getaway to sunbathe, window-shop, and relax on sandy beaches, or a more active summer adventure with sailing, surfing, and hiking, the shores and towns surrounding this spectacular freshwater body have something for everyone to enjoy. Here are four of the most heavenly beach towns in Michigan you won't want to miss!

1/4 St. Joseph

Silver Beach, St. Joseph Michigan

Nicknamed “St. Joe” by locals, beachgoers can find this charming town nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan. The town offers seven spirited beaches, so whether you’re looking to spend the day picnicking at Lions Park, swimming the cool tides at Silver Beach, or hiking the sand dunes at Grand Mere State Park, any beach lover will find they’ve hit the summertime jackpot with St. Joe. If you’re hoping to stay a while, spend a couple nights at one of the 197 cozy campsites available at Warren Dunes State Park. But if you’d prefer to beach-hop, once you’ve enjoyed all that St. Joe has to offer, pack your car and hit the road for a scenic beach road trip; St. Joseph is conveniently located on the south side of the Michigan Pike trail, known historically as one of the country’s first tourist roads.

2/4 Empire

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Also located on Lake Michigan, this quaint beach village is just a short walk or drive from Sleeping Bear Dunes, home to the largest collection of freshwater sand dunes in the world. Atop these miraculous, vibrant dunes, visitors are awarded stunning views of the lake–and it’s no wonder people suggest a sunset hike. At the shoreline, beachgoers can relax or explore the miles of sandy beach, ideal for sunbathing, picnics, and swimming. If you’re feeling adventurous, rent a paddleboard, kayak, or surfboard from Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak located in downtown Empire and ride the waves of Lake Michigan!

3/4 Charlevoix

A view of the Charlevoix Lighthouse

If you’re looking for a picturesque beach town with a rich history, cute downtown, and gorgeous beaches, look no further than Charlevoix Michigan. Situated on an isthmus between Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan, this is a quaint summer destination you won’t want to skip. Relax on their beaches, travel their trails, and stroll through their walkable downtown where you can marvel at passing boats and explore the unique artwork and specialty goods sold in an array of boutiques and stores. If history is your passion, you won’t want to miss a view of the fiery red Charlevoix South Pier Lighthouse, a 1948 historical beauty owned by the town and maintained by the Charlevoix Historical Society.

4/4 Grand Haven

Named for its location, this adorable beach town can be found at the mouth of the Grand River on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Grand Haven attracts thousands of visitors each year, particularly at the Grand Haven State Park, known for its serene, scenic shoreline and pleasant sandy beaches. Ideal for swimming, fishing, and basking in the stunning view, the park is happy to host guests in their comfortable campground or overnight lodge. The park is also home to Grand Haven’s historic lighthouses and beloved pier, all of which are adored by locals and visitors alike. Painted a bright, cheery red, these historical light structures make for a stunning focal point in photos of the Grand Haven South Pier. Visitors can even get a closer view of the 1839 lighthouses, as they’re both connected to the boardwalk–the perfect place to walk or sit in watch of the passing boats.

Michigan’s beaches are overflowed with natural beauty and charming communities waiting to be explored. Take advantage of these incredible landscapes and vibrant, local cultures by planning your next beach vacation today!
