Is America or the world ready for a plus-size bachelorette?

I'm definitely not holding my breath. While the world has become a bit more body positive, we cannot ignore the immense amount of hate that plus-size women still face till this day.

You cannot find one Instagram picture of a plus-size woman that is not riddled with comments of hate. These keyboard warriors have now been given a platform to spread hate without showing their identity. That makes them more balsy and the comments absolutely grotesque.

THE AVERAGE WOMAN

Every woman in this world is not a size zero or a size two. In fact, the average size for a woman in America is a size 16 to 18. So why are women with skinny or modelesque body types still seen as the "only" image of beauty?

It's mostly because America, along with many parts of the world, have superficial ideals of what a woman's body should look like. If you take a look at the 50s magazines, you'll find that the covers feautured real bodies. There was no such things as filters and the editing was very minimal. You saw real stomachs, real thighs, and real arms. Gorgeous gals like Marilyn Monroe graced covers of magazines with their curves and folds galore. Today everything is photoshopped to the point that people gasp at the sight of stretch marks or a real ass with cellulite. It's sad to say that even Marilyn Monroe-considered a size 12-wouldn't even make the cut in these times.

WHY WE NEED A PLUS-SIZE BACHELORETTE

Regardless of people's viewpoints of weight and what is deemed healthy, the reality is that there are many people in this world walking around with plus-size body types. When size zero or size two body types are the only things that are seen, it's basically saying that big people don't matter or don't exist.

Yes, we have models like Ashley Graham and Tabria Majors, but they can't be the plus-size, poster girls for everything. Having a plus-size bachelorette would not only shock the world, but give some representation for the big girls out there.

It will show them that they are also deserving of love and not constantly being friend-zoned for their size. The major question is would the world respond in a positive light or will this lead to even more hate for plus-size women? Will the world view this as promoting unhealthy lifestyles? We will never know unless we are given a plus-size bachelorette.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

We are just now starting to see a bit more diversity in the people casted on the bachelor, but how long until we see a dad-bod or a lady with a little more to hold on to? Representation is such an important concept today and it's about time that is happens in all areas. In magazines, they still photoshop plus-size models to look smaller, so is it really considered representation or should we just shut up and take what we can get?

People often judge others based off of how they look. You are either too skinny or too big. The issue lies in the fact that skinny girls are often celebrated and big girls are not. Having a plus-size bachelorette doesn't mean you support an unheathy lifestyle, it just means that you are showing that there are normal people in this world who are often over-looked.

We have a long way to go in terms of being inclusive of all shapes and sized. It is something that needs to continue to happen because we never know what someone is going through in their lives or the reason for them being that big. Whether a plus-size women is confident at the size she is or currently working to look smaller, we should celebrate and respect her journey.
