A Film Recommendation

Little Women, 2019. Dir. Greta Gerwig.

A movie recommendation I would give to people who enjoy timeless stories like Pride and Prejudice would be Little Women. I would recommend the 2019 version of Little Women, not because of the glorious actors that breathed life into a host of different characters, but the intense emphasis placed on women's voices. Similar to Pride and Prejudice, Little Women gives a refreshing and dousing wind to the hidden thoughts, cries, and wants of women that echo the internal anguish of modern women today. Further, within this film, it is not just women bound by the squandering fists of 19th-century societal demands of decency and righteous expectations.

With steady and callous fingers, Greta Gerwig leaves bits of breadcrumbs to guide its viewers within the 2019 feature film. The film tackles various age-old questions that always lingered in the back of our minds after reading or viewing female-led stories, especially those of the romantic variety. Both films provoke feelings and thoughts that lead us to question if love is a true requirement to live a happy and fulfilling life. But what of the woman we've become so attached to without "true love" being able to sweep her within its strong patriarchal arms?

It's no surprise to lovers, haters, and fair spectators of the societal terms discussed in both films, which are set as a requirement for women of this age. Similar to its predecessor Little Women features a cluster of sisters that takes on each societal expectation. Our heroines take society's expectations and place them next to their reflections and gander at the restrictions and mild freedoms gifted onto them and make a decision. Each woman then proceeds to make a decision regarding their future that they may or may not have otherwise chosen if given the full extent of freedom without constraints of what a woman should and should not do. Moreover, this film highlights the hidden thoughts of women and the idea of what makes a woman worthy not only in the eyes of men but within her own delicate irises.

Further, despite the objectification of women and misogyny enabled by an overly masculine society, both films explore women's still ever-present desire for love and purpose. Both films explore what it means to love and find love within their own individual rights despite the odds while still needing to fit within the society they secretly reject. This film also favor's Austin's as it takes care to highlight the perspective of men. Further, we are given a glance at how women's expectations continue to move and shake men into action, confusion, and decision-making that could improve their lives or haunt them with endless possibilities of what could have been.

In conclusion, I would recommend the 2019 film Little Women for lovers of Pride and Prejudice not only for the romanticism of choice but how the latent thoughts of women and men in both tales have transformed over the years. These narratives change over time to better fit society's advances while also standing true to both genders' innate desires and wants. Both films are deemed "old-fashioned" or outdated in the eyes of the youth. However, it serves as a whisper of past lives, and breaths are taken to a common goal. Further, these films can be considered a necessary light to give closer introspection into the female psyche. Stories such as these are indispensable, especially in times of the "Me Too" Movement when so many women have not only found their voices but had their inner dialogue and fear amplified for everyone to see and hear. To defeat fear and shame is to address it, call it by its name.
