THE LIGHT DOES NOT NEED YOU TO BECOME THE DARK

The Honed Crone on polarity, destruction, and the discipline of remaining whole

By THE HONED CRONEPublished 4 days ago • 3 min read

Before the first name was spoken, before the first temple raised its stone throat toward the stars, there was the Great Mystery: the beginning and the ending, the womb and the tomb, the hand that plants and the hand that prunes.

If God is truly all, what could stand outside God? What second throne could exist beyond the infinite? Perhaps creation contains opposites, but that does not make every opposite holy. The storm belongs to the sky; cruelty does not become goodness because it happens beneath it.

Day and night. Inhale and exhale. Root and branch. The egg divides; the seed splits its skin. Autumn strips the tree so spring can arrive. It is a turning wheel, and every turning has a shadow.

But hear the distinction: darkness existing is not the same as choosing to do harm. Decay is not abuse. A forest fire is not the same as a person setting fire to another person’s refuge. Death is woven into life; cruelty is a decision made against life. Destruction can clear ground for renewal, but suffering inflicted for power, pleasure, or punishment is not transformed into virtue by calling it balance.

When someone knowingly chooses to wound another, they have crossed into an act that belongs to them. Their choice is theirs to answer for. Their repair is theirs to undertake. You do not have to follow them into the pit to prove that you understand its depth. You do not have to become a weapon because someone made themselves a weapon and violated you.

Vengeance offers a counterfeit altar: kneel here, it whispers, and pain will make you powerful. But revenge binds the injured to the injury, asking the wounded to keep carrying the fire that burned them. Justice may require truth, boundaries, testimony, consequences, and protection. Forgiveness, if it comes, need not mean access, absolution without repair, or pretending the wound never happened. It can mean releasing your soul from the job of becoming the executioner.

“Vengeance is mine,” says the sacred voice. Let that be a boundary, not a threat. Let it mean: I will not surrender my character to the person who harmed me. I will not confuse accountability with cruelty. I will protect what is vulnerable without worshipping what is violent. If I was penetrated with hate then through prayer and wisdom I will give birth to love.

Blood, moon, season, seed, birth, loss, return: the body is a living altar where change announces itself without apology. The sacred feminine can be tender and fierce, sheltering and volcanic. She knows that making room for life sometimes means ending what can no longer live. She knows the difference between fierce protection and needless harm.

Jesus overturned tables. The gentle one was not spineless. The light is not passive, and goodness is not a command to stand down while the vulnerable are devoured. There is a shadow we must acknowledge: anger that warns us, fire that fuels resistance, teeth that guard the threshold. Hone it. Give it a purpose. Let it defend, testify, create, and set the boundary. Do not let it rule the kingdom.

When you look into the void, beware of making a home there. When you fight monsters, beware of wearing their face.

I am the light, the light I am. I am the shadow, the shadow I know. I can meet my anger without handing it the crown. I can witness destruction without becoming its servant. I can stand before the unknown and still turn my face toward what nourishes life.

Be still and know: the whole is vast enough to contain the storm. You are not required to be blown away. Breathe, and watch the weather change.

She keeps her roots in the deep earth and lifts her branches toward the fire of dawn. She knows the power of destruction, and chooses what that power is for. Alchemy. Courage. Creation.

Rise. Repair what is yours. Protect what is vulnerable. Leave the other soul to its own reckoning. Darkness wants you to chase chaos blindly into the night.

Keep facing the light.
