The sound of techno-punk confirmed I was in the right place. In their instructions on how to reach El Cocal Glass Studio, co-owners Chiara Lee Taiarol and Mariana Oliboni had said to "follow the music" as I made my way down a dusty alley and into an industrial complex off the touristy streets of Murano, the tiny island in the Venetian lagoon known globally for its glassmaking craft. "You'll hear us," they had told me over the phone.

kanchan chauhanPublished 2 years ago in VivaA cloud shaped like the Queen
Today the Queen has passed, and I happen to be on English soil. Despite not being British, I felt a knot form in my stomach as I heard the news from my mother-in-law's mouth. She rushed down the stairs from her bedroom, where we had just been wondering what would happen if the Queen passed, whether the throne would go through Charles, or, since he is already in his 70s, fall directly to William. Among other stories and anecdotes, Lou told me the Queen had decided to hold on to her office for as long as possible, among other reasons, because she wanted to shelter her family from the burden of the crown. We mentioned Diana in passing, Meghan, Andrew, and all the contemporary scandals and agreed on the stoicism and class with which her Majesty had endured them all. My like or dislike of monarchies aside, Elizabeth II was a remarkable figure, and I cannot help but admire the grace of a woman whose life was publicly scrutinised and discussed as much as hers was. Not half an hour later, the news came.
Zoe Espino MorenoPublished 2 years ago in VivaWhy I Hate Job Interviews?
In a society where it's important to at least pretend everyone is equal, job interviews are a stark and constant reminder that we're not. Well, I suppose it's only constant in my case because I never land the job and therefore, am always looking for another, but my point stands. I find it very reassuring that many of us live in a world where any drunk off the street can shout something at the President about his mother, and the President is forced to feign dignity and walk away with aplomb, or at worst, tweet a comeback 6 hours later in the middle of the night. My heart swells with pride in knowing that regardless of how high and mighty you are, a complete nobody like me can still make your life a bit shitty without fear of reprisal. The freedom to call the President's mother a whore to his face is very much the gold standard for an egalitarian civilization.
