Strong Female Role Models (Other Than Oprah)

Strong Role Models Teens Should Look up to

When we hear the words "Strong female leader" our minds usually wander to Oprah or Michele Obama. Oprah has a strong influence on a lot of charities and her interviews with inspirational people can really change an outlook on life. How about the other strong female role models? Who are they, and what do they do that's inspirational?

1. Serena Williams

I find that a lot of female athletes are worth looking up to, they show devotion, passion, and effort. Which is something we sometimes lack when we want to give up. She started up her own school in Africa, so under privileged children could learn. Williams has her own foundation line and her own clothing line. Many times she was criticized for her race and her gender and her body. Even though Williams had her hardships, she still remains strong and confident. She was featured in Nike's commercial to inspire young teens that they too "can do it."

2. Ashley Graham

She is considered a plus-size model. Often, in swimsuit magazines, they show women with little curves and slim body types. We hardly ever see plus size models in magazines, well that where Graham makes history, she was the first-ever plus-size model to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, from there her career went to Vogue and other large magazines. Graham is an advocate for positive body image, she teaches young girls to love the body they are in and not change for anyone.

3. Emma Watson

One of the major stars of Harry Potter has grown up. As a feminist, she stood up at the United Nations podium and spoke about true feminism and how the meaning of the word was lost. She is constantly fighting for women's rights and education. Education is something everyone should have the opportunity to have, it should not be restricted to men as some third world countries have.

4. Ellen DeGeneres

For young girls who struggle with identity, she is an icon everyone can look up to. After DeGeneres came out as being gay, she had lost her job on the air and struggled to find her way again. She managed to get her show up and running again, showing teens of the LGBTQ community that identity should not stop them from becoming successful. One of the most inspiring things she has said on her show is: "Love one another" and repeats every single episode.

5. Tina Fey

The queen of comedy has proven to be one of the most inspiring women there is. Comedy was always known as mostly a "boy's thing," she turned those tables by winning a Mark Twain award for Comedy and she was the first female writer of SNL. If that does not prove to you that her success is inspiring, then read more about her.

6. Beyonce

This icon is obvious, but should be written about none the less. She is a queen, with being the second most won Grammy Award winner, she is an inspiration. Not only are her videos and music award-winning, but she also spoke out about racism, marriage, feminism and other majors issues.

7. Michele Obama

Even though she is the former president's wife, she has made a name for herself. Women around the world are starting to recognize her as more than Barrack Obama's wife. She had started the movement "Let's move," to get children more active and to avoid child obesity. Obama has changed the way that families eat, even those with low income. She truly is an inspiration to look up to.

8. J.K. Rowling

One of the most well-known authors. She was nearly on the brink of going into poverty. She wrote Harry Potter that was rejected time and time again, until a publisher picked it up and now she is one of the richest people out there. Rowling is one of the richest writers that exist.

9. Zendaya

Unlike most Disney stars, she is one icon that young girls can still look up to, she teaches kids and young females to love who they are and love who they are becoming. She uses her status as a celebrity to inspire young teens and is doing a great job of it.
