Say NO To Rape.

If you haven't been following the news, or have been so preoccupied with the horrible things happening in America that you haven't had the time to check the international news, then let me alert you of the tragedy that happened in Nigeria.

Over the weekend and up until now, the hashtag #JusticeForUwa has been trending. In addition to this, are hashtags: #SayNoToRape and #WhyIDidntReport. All three hashtags are bringing a spotlight to the horrific amount of rape cases we hear in Nigeria and how as a nation, we must do better.

This was all prompted because of the horrible story of 22 year old student, Uwavera Omozuwa.

The young woman had been studying in a quiet church near her house in Benin City when she was

Uwavera had been studying in a "quiet" church near her home in Benin City when she was raped and killed. Uwavera who had wanted to become a nurse, died in a hospital on Saturday, three days after the attack.

According to her family, they received a phone call from a woman at the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Wednesday evening informing them about the ordeal. Uwavera was rushed to a hospital after a security guard found her with her skirt torn and her shirt covered in blood.

A police spokesperson in southern Edo State told BBC Pidgin that they were treating the incident as a murder, not as a rape case.

Following this horrendous news, Nigerians and Nigerian celebrities took to Twitter to speak out about the grave inhumanity and evil of this. Here are a few reactions.

Genevieve Nnaji.

Genevieve who hardly ever posts on Twitter was so appalled by this story and the story of Tina Ezekwe, a young woman who was killed by the police in Berger, Lagos.

She tweeted a powerful statement about the constant fear of men that women have to endure, a heartbreaking tweet that sadly is the norm for a lot of women.

Adaora Ukoh

Lekki Wives actress, Adaora Ukoh also took to Twitter to bash the people who blame the victim's clothes for their rape. She posted this very educative and relevant tweet along with a picture that counters every argument of victim blaming as pertains to clothing choice.

Waje

Nigerian singer, Waje, took to Twitter to express her anger in a slew of tweets. She specifically targets people who make light of rape and rape accusations, as well as targets law enforcement for the low conviction rate of rape cases. In a chilling tweet, she quotes some statistics from the Mirabel Center that says they "culled 669 reported cases of Rape from 0-5years, another 1017 cases of Rape from 6-10years, 14-17 year olds have a record of 1155".

This is alarming.

Miss Ezeani

Nollywood comedian and content creator, Miss Ezeani, had an outburst when Nigerian Instagram blogger, Tunde Ednut, posted a "Smash or Pass" video on his page. She was disgusted at his wording in his caption and his decision to post such a thing at a time when we're talking about women being raped.

She wrote as the caption of the video:

I’ve kept my cool about all that’s been happening because I myself have been a victim of a gruesome rape at a younger age and so I didn’t want to get sentimental.

But seeing this online today? I’m triggered!

What is this madness?

The Initial Outburst:

Following that outburst, a lot of people took to her comment section to tell her to calm down, saying that Tunde Ednut did not mean have any illwill when posting the picture. However, Miss Ezeani was still not having it and went on another video to say

Only a rape victim will tell you how much rape sensitive talks trigger and you don't have a right to tell them how to feel about it.

before going on to speak more about the issue.

Niyola

Nigerian singer Niyola called out for justice.

Adesua Etomi

Nollywood actress, Adesua Etomi, shared her thoughts about how far the discussion about rape still has to go.

Kate Henshaw

Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, called for better protection for the girl child.

Don Jazzy

Nigerian hitmaker, Don Jazzy, also spoke out on the issue saying:

Overall, this topic of rape is so gruesome and as Don Jazzy said: SHAME to anybody who rapes, supports rape, or closes their eyes to the reality of rape and what rape victims go through.

It is still such a prevalent issue and one that the government needs to tackle more fiercely and put stringent laws against.

All our hearts go out to the family of Uwavera and Tina, because no matter how much it pains our heart, the pain is incomparable to the pain that these women's families will be feeling.
