Laura's Boutique

Why I No Longer Support It

For those of you who are not familiar with Laura's Boutique, it is a small clothing brand that currently has three locations open (to my knowledge) in Los Angeles, CA, which are all run by Laura Mellado. Laura's Boutique has recently been booming more than ever and this is probably due to the exposure she and her brand have gotten on social media. It's very clear that she cares about her fans and supporters as she is always doing giveaways and often interacts with customers through her comments answering any questions they have as well as providing them with promo codes to save them money. I say this so that it's clear I am in no way attacking her or her personality. In fact, I think she is one of the very few brands who has stayed connected with her supporters no matter how large her fan base has gotten. I am writing this SOLELY to address the lack of diversity when it comes to the body types she and her brand represent.

I started shopping here a while back and would always order from her website. It wasn't until about a couple months ago when I followed the brand's Instagram page when I noticed something that was really disappointing. She is the only person that models her clothes. She has no other models on her page nor on her website. They are all modeled by her. At first glance, you might think "wow, that's really impressive! One person modeling all of that clothes." But the more I thought about it, the more it bugged me. I searched and searched for a picture of someone else modeling her clothes but to my disappointment, that picture did not exist. In fact, not only does she not have anyone's image but her own on her website, she also has her sizing and measurements included in the size chart. I'm sure this is great for those who have her body type, but again it gives off the impression that only those with her figure should wear her clothing. Sure, she features plenty of women on her page, but of course they all have very similar body types to hers, that slim, hour-glass shape.

Again I am in no way attacking her personally, nor am I attacking her brand but what I would like to know is why the lack of diversity? We are in 2018 for god sakes! We should be supporting all body types, shapes, and sizes! The lack of diversity I see here speaks for itself and unfortunately I can no longer support a brand that is not inclusive when it comes to body types. Laura, you might not be fat shaming people but you are showing people that your brand is for one body type and one body type only: YOURS.

For those who read this and are current supporters, I am not asking you to stop supporting her brand. I am simply asking for your help in bringing this to Laura's Boutique's attention as this is something that she might not even be aware that she's doing. I encourage you to look through her page as well as her website and hopefully that will inspire you to speak out and bring attention to this. Being someone with such a large platform and fan base, it's important to be aware of the consequences/effects your actions can have whether it's your intention or not. I hope this is something that is fixed in the future because again this was a place I often shopped at and I would love to start doing so again but until I see more inclusivity, this is just not a brand that I am comfortable supporting at the moment.

(I have included the brand's IG page as well as their website and pictures from both sites.)
