When it comes to acute pain, men and women are not created identical. Women tend to face more occurrences of back pain due to triggers like hormonal changes, mineral deficiencies, longer working hours, or pregnancy.

Understanding back pain and its symptoms

The human back is made up of an intricate arrangement of ligaments, muscles, tendons, discs, and bones. All these amalgamate and work together to support the body and facilitate us to move around. The segments of the spine are softened with cartilage-like pads which are known as discs.

When problems with any of these components take place due to strain, medical conditions, and poor posture, it can lead to back pain in women.

Let’s look at the most common reasons that can cause damage to women’s back and can be the reason for their constant back pain.

Reasons why women experience chronic back pain & how to overcome them:

1) Poor Posture

Poor postures can hurt your health more than you realize. The stress from poor posture can lead to back pain and limit your ability to move comfortably. It can also prevent you from enjoying your usual routine activities.

So, you should change the way you carry yourself and sit, and you should improve your posture to ease your back pain. If you don’t improve your posture and correct it, then you will need therapy, or in the worst case, consultations with spine surgeons. To fix your posture, you can carry out the following changes in your routine life.

  • Look straight ahead and keep your head balanced above your spine when you are walking or running. While doing these activities it is vital to maintain good posture.
  • We women usually spend a lot of our day sitting whether we are at work, just relaxing at home, cutting vegetables and preparing a meal, or teaching our child. So, if you don’t maintain good posture while sitting then you may face back problems. So, ensure that your head is level over your spine, arms flexed at 75° to 80°, and feet are flat on the floor.
  • While lifting anything, bend your hips not your lower back and keep your chest in front of your hips. You should keep your weight close to the body and while changing the direction you should lead with your hips.

2) Big Breasts

Having large breasts can be one of the common causes of backache. Bigger breasts make harder for your back muscles to balance your body while walking or exercising, and this can lead to pain in your back.

When non-surgical treatments fail, then breast reduction surgery is a viable solution to cure acute back pain caused by large breasts.

Breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure that doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay. So, patients can go home the same day.

Here are 3 steps that you can take at home to reduce your back pain caused by bigger breasts.

  • You should always wear the correct size bra. It sounds understandable, but most women do not wear a correctly fitting bra, and this places stress on the back.
  • If you have excess weight, try to lose it. It can help you make your breast lighter which ultimately minimizes unnecessary tension and chronic back pain.
  • You can even opt for different types of exercise. For example, you can try various yoga poses to manage your breast-related back pain. It can be really beneficial in easing your backache.

3) Pregnancy

Pregnancy puts a lot of strain on the lower back and it can be the reason for many physiological changes in women’s body. The weight of the baby can put a terrific strain on the groin and lower back.

Even during pregnancy and just before the end of term, a woman’s body produces a hormone that can be the reason for bone loss in the pelvic region and lower back joint surfaces.

After delivery, the mother continues lifting, carrying, and holding the baby and forgets that the baby’s weight might increase dramatically in the first two to three years. Doing so puts additional strain on the arms, neck, and back and results in severe back pain.

To prevent back pain during pregnancy and after delivery, you can practice the following tips.

  • Practice good posture, properly lift the weight, and wear low-heeled shoes with good arch support.
  • Sleep on your side, not your back, include physical activities in your daily routine and try hot or cold massage.
  • After giving birth to your child, try to get back to your normal weight within six to seven weeks.
  • While picking your child, bend your knees. Don’t carry your child on your hip as it overloads the back muscles.
  • While breastfeeding your child, bring your baby to your breast rather than bending over to the baby.

4) Obesity

Obesity places excessive stress on the back, pelvis, and spine and this can trigger the development of chronic backache. As per a study, obesity is directly connected to back pain. The risk of back pain increases with an increase in BMI.

If you are overweight or obese, you can do the following things to lose your extra pounds.

  • Talk with your spine specialist or physician and start a weight loss program. It is important to consult your doctor because if you have backache then your exercise program will probably different than a person without back pain.
  • Losing even 10% of your body weight may show amazing outcomes and even reverse your back pain symptoms. So, take the help of a qualified fitness expert and nutritionist to maintain a healthy body weight.

5) Injury or overexertion of the muscles or bones

Repetitive strain from lifting or unexpected awkward moments can damage muscles and ligaments in the back and spine. If you have weakened or out of shape muscles, then overexertion can lead to painful muscle contraction.

Sometimes, while exercising at the gym, a person gets injured and this can cause back pain. Back injuries are the most common cause of back pain.

Most back pain usually will get better and go away by itself in two to five weeks. Some home treatments and remedies can also play a major role in relieving back pain that is caused by minor injuries. It is generally a good idea to carry on your normal activities while your back is healing, but you should avoid heavy lifting in this period to avoid worsening the problem. If the pain persists for longer periods of time then you should consult a doctor and take appropriate treatment to ease back pain.

Conclusion

Chronic pain is not only more common in women than men, but the signs are often more severe. If you suffer from back pain then a wise move would be to take the first step toward early treatment. This will help to alleviate your pain and help keep the dilemma from getting worse.

Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing persistent back pain. They can appropriately diagnose the cause and create a treatment plan that works best for your specific case.
