As one of South Asia's most popular beach holiday hubs, the Maldives welcomes countless visitors from around the world. Although it is easy to get lost in the touristy atmosphere and pursuits of one of the last remaining paradises on earth, travellers in search of something more can always explore the islands like a local. From signing up for unusual activities to immersing yourself in local culture, here are some tips on how to adopt the Maldivian way during your stay in the archipelago.

1. Spend Time in Male

Whether you are spending your vacation in Maldives All Inclusive resorts such as the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives or any other venue, it is crucial to spend more time in Male. Although the nation's capital is largely ignored by the travelling masses in favour of remote resort islands, Male is the cultural epicentre of the archipelago. This dynamic city not only houses the best shops and restaurants in the country but also iconic heritage sites such as the Grand Friday Mosque, several presidential palaces and the National Museum. Male is also the only location where you are bound to run into locals that are not part of the hotel staff and where you can witness the daily life of ordinary Maldivians going about their day.

2. Get Around Like a Local

Travellers who visit the Maldives for the first time will notice that apart from those inhabiting the capital city, the rest of the population relies on water travel to hop between islands. While tourists may jet off on seaplanes and chartered yachts, citizens often rely on local ferry services and speed boats to travel around the archipelago. Tourists who wish to experience the country like a local should follow suit and navigate the archipelago on these two modes of transportation or hitch a ride on a catamaran, as in the days of old.

3. Drink Like a Maldivian

When it comes to staying hydrated and indulging in afternoon or morning beverages, tourists who are looking to engage with Maldivian culture should opt out of their usual choices. Coconut water should replace water or any other juices you are used to consuming for refreshment or with meals as it is perhaps the most popular drink in the Maldives. The health benefits notwithstanding, coconut water is ubiquitous in local restaurants while it is also sold on street corner stalls. When it comes to tea, look no further than Sai Tea, which is served in conventional Maldivian teahouses around the country. Usually served with a local snack called Hedika, Sai tea is a variation of black tea.

4.  Learn Dhivehi

While there is no need to become fluent in the Maldivian native tongue, learning a few words and useful phrases in Dhivehi can go a long way in your interactions with locals. You can sign up for language courses in your resort or simply follow an online guide or carry a dictionary to engage with Maldivians in their own language. Sticking to everyday phrases and commonly used idioms will help you feel less isolated and more at home in the archipelago.

5. Sign up for a Culinary Class

Maldivian cuisine is one of the most underrated culinary styles in the world but those who are fortunate enough to be visiting the islands can learn to prepare a dish or two using local ingredients. Cooking demonstrations and culinary classes are often part and parcel of resort packages in the Maldives and those who have a penchant for seafood dishes will delight in just how easy it is to prepare a Garudhiya fish broth soup, reef fish cutlets, or mas huni the traditional way.
