Now, how do birth control pills work? Carry on reading and you'll find the answers to all of your questions.

What is a birth control pill?

Let’s start off with the basics of what the pill actually is.

Birth control pills are a type of medicine that is filled with hormones to help avoid getting pregnant. Since you’d be taking this everyday, it’s super effective when it comes to pregnancy prevention.

However, there isn’t just one brand of birth control pills — there’s many. If one brand isn’t right for you or a type of brand is way out of your budget, there will always be a brand that’s made just for you. Also, you can talk to your doctor to see which brand is right for you.

Not only does it help you not get pregnant, this pill comes with a lot of other benefits, too. It can help with the terrible acne you’re struggling with, help with menstrual cramps, lighten periods, etc.

See what I mean when I say this pill works wonders?

How does it prevent pregnancies?

What a birth control pill exactly does is it stops the sperm from meeting the egg, this process is called fertilization — but we don’t want that happening.

While the hormones in the pill completely shut down ovulation, no eggs are there to meet with the sperm. Basically, this means that you cannot get pregnant (yay!).

In addition, the pill’s hormones thickens the mucus in the cervix. Gross, but listen to this, since the cervical mucus becomes thick, it makes it more difficult for the sperm to even swim towards an egg. The thick mucus in this situation is like a security guard and he’s protecting the celebrity from being attacked by insane, screaming fans. Keep the egg safe from those wild sperms, you thick mucus.

How do I take it?

Taking birth control pills is fairly easy, but you have to take it right if you really want it to work properly.

First things first, always have an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to take the pill. When it comes to birth control pills, you always have to take it the exact same time every single day, or else it won’t work right. So, setting an alarm on your phone set to the time you should take it can really help you remind yourself if you’re a forgetful person (like me).

Keep your pill pack someplace that’s easy to access like on the kitchen counter or even by your tooth brush. You really don’t want to lose your pills.

Finally, always refill your prescription when it’s starting to run low. It’s possible that you might not refill your pill pack that same day, it can possibly take a few days. That’s why refilling it when you have a week left of pills is the best option. Always stock up!

What can it protect me from?

Birth control pills can only prevent you from getting pregnant. Which means all those STDs can still come through to your body even if you're on the pill.

So, if you really want to protect yourself from any STDs, condoms can actually help you with that! Also, using a condom while taking birth control pills maximizes the effectiveness of you not getting pregnant! It's basically a win win here.

So, how do birth control pills work? You can ask yourself that now.
