It is impossible to estimate the number of rapes in this country over the period of a year because so many rape cases are not reported. This is a sad statistic because nobody should be the victim of a violent crime and yet be afraid to come forward for fear of being considered the perpetrator rather than the victim. But, it's a sad fact and there has to be a change.

The movie; The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," is a musical starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. Although this movie is light and entertaining, some thought should be given to legal houses of prostitution. The movie was based on a real house of prostitution in Grange, TX. It was called The Chicken Ranch and closed down on August 1, 1973. After the movie aired, the Chicken Ranch became a place of interest and it is still standing today, although not an operating business.

A newer, more modern approach to these houses would require a fully staffed security guard system so nobody was abused or hurt, and the women who worked there would be of legal age and checked by a doctor weekly. The men who came in would not be able to be with a woman until they went through a test to make sure they were not passing on Hep C, HIV, or any other disease. A background check would also be imperative to make sure nobody was going to be let in that had mental issues or had a felony background. With safeguards in place, it would give men a place to go for sex if they had the need. I realize this sounds like a shocking opinion, but establishing such places would be better than a man raping a woman on the street. I realize that most sexual predators are not mentally right, but some are, and simply have control issues. There also needs to be new laws passed so women who are raped by a husband or boyfriend are not dismissed because she said yes once. Your body is yours and yours alone and does not belong to someone else just because they married you.

I am not wearing blinders and know that certain rapes cannot be stopped because of such places as legal houses of prostitution, because some rapes occur for a different reason. Perhaps the woman who is raped has become a point of obsession for a man, or maybe he feels his girlfriend owes him sex and takes it even though she says no. Sometimes the rape is based on jealousy or a need to get even. There will always be various and different reasons for rape to occur, but if the ones that are based on a need could be stopped, it might be a first step toward lowering the number of rapes each year, and getting all women to come forward if they are involved in an incident that is considered rape. It has been ruled that any penetration is considered rape.

Another aspect is educating women about being aware of what is going on around them at all times, checking the back seat of their cars before getting in, thinking about what may seem like an invitation based on the clothes they wear, what they say or certain behaviors. While it may seem unfair to have to think about your clothing while men don't have to think about theirs, it is still worth thinking about and looking at what you have on. Is the neck scooped down so far your cleavage shows? Is your skirt so short your bottom peeks out when you walk? Some men think a woman may be flirting with him, or teasing him, and seductive behavior or certain words can trigger that. Taking self-defense classes is another way to learn to protect yourself, not parking in dark areas, and looking around before opening the car door. Taking extra precautions is never a bad thing.

I took Akido, which is a form of marshal arts where the theory is to fight to the death . I was the only woman in class, but learned not only how to physically fight back but how to mentally fight back. The instructor taught us how to use our inner energy and focus in order to combat different types of threats. I would recommend this to anyone, but make sure the instructor is qualified. I've also been in marshal arts classes with ego-centered instructors who were not very good.
