Aging Gracefully

Through Menopause

So, I don't usually talk about the big "M," but today we are. Menopause has either been made fun of through funny commercials and print ads, or thought of as a personal doom, such as life ends with the completion of menopause.

I think the reason that menopause is made fun of or ridiculed is that for women, it can be a scary change. Menopause is a new phase in life that is unknown. Our bodies betray how we normally feel or think, and that can leave us feeling insecure when we should be confident. Menopause can cause bodily reactions, such as sweating or shaking when we least expect it, causing us to laugh or joke through a serious issue.

I believe menopause should be treated as any other medical condition. It should be respected for the life-changing event it is and those of us going through the "change" should adjust at the speed we need to accept these awkward and sometimes downright weird changes that are happening to our bodies.

So, ladies, here are a few things you can do to help ease symptoms and achieve better quality of life so that menopause doesn't have to be a scary and we can live our best lives:

1. Drink Your Water

I know its hard on super busy days to get that water in, but drinking adequate water (48-64oz) keeps the body hydrated, can help cut down on headaches, and helps in the regulation of blood pressure. It also increases metabolism a tiny bit, which is always a bonus. Plus water keeps the bodies cells hydrated and youthful.

2. Exercise!

Let's face facts... unless you really love the exercise, most people think of exercise as a necessary evil. But exercise doesn't have to be long or dreaded. Take the long walk to your destination, get a yoga app (there are some great ones, that have shorter five minute programs to fit your busy day), buy some two-pound strap on weights to wear doing chores. Dance through a couple of your favorite songs. Exercise can be simple and fun.

3. Cut Down On Sugar

Yeah... this one's hard! I love my peppermint candies! But even cutting down on sugar consumption can help ease any blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can be the cause of any excessive moodiness and irritability. So maybe enjoy a small, snack size candy bar instead of the full size version.

4. Make Regular Meals A Priority

Eating willy nilly is a thing of the past! Studies show that eating small, balanced meals with a little protein at regular times every day can help if weight loss is the goal.

5. Cut Yourself Some Slack!

Menopause can bring on weird body changes that you have to grow accustomed to. Realizing that not everyday will be perfect and allowing for bad days can actually help ease any undo stress.

I hope these tips help the ladies who are actively going through menopause now.

So, my oil loving ladies, here is my favorite oil recipe to help with the symptoms of irritability, mood swings, and general grouchiness that comes with the menopause process.

Ladies Blend

*This is for 2 ounce's of lotion at a time*

  • 1 oz Coconut Oil
  • 1 oz Shea Butter
  • 6 drops Lavender
  • 12 drops Frankincense
  • 12 drops Clary Sage

I would warm the shea butter until lumpy (if it is clear, it is too hot), then add my coconut oil, and lastly add your essential oils.

This blend helps regulate mood, eases irritability, and helps ease pain.

And lastly, take time to realize that you are still the same awesome woman that you were before these changes!
