Abortion

What you need to know

In this article, I will tell you the basics about abortion. We will just be talking about abortion, not miscarriages, which are sometimes called spontaneous abortion. Some people are against it just because they don't understand what an abortion is and why people would get one. I will explain all of that, so let's dive in.

Let's start with why women do it. In some cases, people perform gender selection abortions, where if you don't want the baby because of its gender, you have an abortion. Some have an abortion because they got pregnant too young. For some women, it's a financial reason. Others may have one because of a medical condition. There's also the abortion done because the baby was unexpected or a woman became pregnant on birth control. There's other reasons, but those are the most common.

An abortion is where someone ends their pregnancy either by a medical procedure or a pill. This is different from a miscarriage, because a miscarriage is where a pregnancy ends by itself. The most common type of abortion is where the cervix is dilated and the baby is sucked out through a suction device. When done right by skilled and trained professionals, the risk of any problems are very low. Abortions that are done by untrained people or in unsanitary conditions cause 47,000 deaths and 5 million hospital admissions each year.

Abortions have been going on since ancient times. Of course, they were different than ours. They used herbs and sharp tools. There was even an old carving depicting a demon inducing an abortion.

The first type of abortion is medical or the pill abortion. It usually takes one or two pills and can be used in the first or second trimester. Most people get the pills at a clinic like Planned Parenthood, online or at some pharmacies. This pill or set of pills should not be confused with the morning-after pill. There is a chance it may fail, and if that's the case, a surgical procedure will need to be done to finish the job. There is also a reversal for the pill abortion, and most of the time, it's a shot.

The second type is surgical abortion. There's a few ways of doing the surgery. The first type is a dilation and suction abortion, also known as dilation and evacuation. This type is usually done up to 15 weeks of pregnancy. When they do this type of abortion, they dilate the cervix and suction the fetus out. There's also mini-suction where the cervix doesn't have to be dilated, this is only used in very early pregnancy. After 16 weeks, the method of abortion that they use is called intact dilation and extraction, also known as intrauterine cranial decompression. This type of abortion uses the same method of removing the baby, but they decompress the fetus' head before they remove it. It is also called the partial birth abortion and had been federally banned in America. In the third trimester, another form of abortion can be used and it is called hysterotomy, which is similar to a C-section but with a smaller incision. First trimester procedures can generally be performed using local anesthesia and second trimester procedures may require general anesthesia.

Labor induction abortion is also called induced miscarriage. This method is used at clinics where they don't have the means to do the surgical methods for abortions. It is also used by abortionists who just prefer the method. This type of abortion may be performed from 13 weeks of pregnancy to the third trimester. It is very uncommon in the United States but is the way 80% of all abortions are done in Sweden and other nearby countries.

There are other methods, but the ones that I listed are the most common. Please do your research, especially if you want to get an abortion. Know all the facts. It is so easy for an abortion can go wrong, because it takes skill for people to perform an abortion. It does, however, have a lower mortality rate than plastic surgery. Abortion can have risks involved, including uterine perforation, pelvic infection, and retained products (a.k.a leaving stuff inside her). Preventive antibiotics can help with infection. Another risk is that the abortion will not work and the pregnancy won't end. There can also be blood clots in the women's uterus. Women can also experience heavy bleeding and injuries to her cervix, uterus or other organs. If a woman is allergic to certain medicine, she may want to check before having abortions. Some women do regret their abortion or experience depression, but those numbers are low.

In rare cases, an aborted fetus can survive outside of the uterus after the abortion. The staff of the hospital or clinic are required to provide emergency care if they see any signs of life in an aborted fetus. This usually happens later in the pregnancy when the fetus is more developed.

Some pro-lifers will tells us lies about the risks of having an abortion, but we will cover the myths in another post. I hope you learned a lot in this post.
