Motherhood – there is nothing quite like it. The first time your newborn grips your finger with his or her little hand, your heart melts. It’s absolutely pure, filling you with so much love and a sense of pride.

Yet, most new mothers will probably agree that once you hold your newborn in your arms, your priorities shift. Suddenly, you are spending every waking minute tending to the needs of your little one, putting yourself in second place. Add to this little or no sleep, hormonal imbalances, a change in lifestyle, and it’s no surprise that a quite shower can seem like a luxury.

While this is completely normal, you also need to realize that your health and well-being matter as well. With this in mind, here are 4 simple ways to look stunning after pregnancy, making you feel like yourself again even as your life revolves around your little one:

Take care of your skin

One crucial thing to bear in mind is that pregnancy may leave you struggling with skin-related issues such as acne, pigmentation, dark circles under the eyes, and stretch marks. Even if you have great skin postpartum, it is important to take care of your skin on a daily basis in order to avoid looking exhausted.

Twice a day, use a mild face cleanser and then apply a lightweight moisturizer with built-in sunscreen to keep your skin feeling fresh, clean, and hydrated. Once a week, exfoliate your skin with a good body scrub (preferably herbal or fruit-based) to get rid of any dead skin cells. It’s a simple but effective technique.

Exercise frequently

Every woman’s postpartum recovery is different; however, walking is the #1 form of exercise recommended by doctors after pregnancy. It will allow you to get that much-needed fresh air to recharge your batteries. If you cannot find someone to tend to your baby, you can simply put them in a wrap or stroller and get your walk on together.

Some other forms of exercise that you can try to support your mind and body are yoga or safe, low-impact aerobic activities that are specifically meant for mothers’ post-pregnancy. Done on a frequent basis, these are the simplest and easiest approaches to strengthening your muscles, boosting your blood circulation, and improving your overall health.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water plays a vital role in daily functioning, especially during and after pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, hydration directly impacts your milk production and well-being. However, even if you are not nursing, staying hydrated helps in moisturizing your skin, eliminating toxins from your body, and optimizing recovery.

It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day which, after you have given birth, will help in supporting your liver and stabilizing your hormones. For this reason, consider having a reusable water bottle with you everywhere you go.

Take time off and relax

Becoming a mother is a rewarding experience but it does come with its challenges. Those first few months after giving birth, do not push yourself. Even though it may be difficult to ask for help or to admit that you need it, postpartum is a time when you should be focusing on your and your child’s needs.

So, take time off and relax. The ability to grow human being makes a woman’s body a true wonder but remember that you too are only human.

To wrap it up

The all-consuming journey into motherhood means feeling it all - overwhelming joy and utter exhaustion. Yet, the majority of new mothers feel overwhelmed by the idea of beauty, especially because it is during such a tender time when the newborn becomes the centre of attention.

There is no shame in taking some time to pamper yourself and to look after your emotional health. When you look in the mirror, you deserve to see a strong and beautiful woman looking back at you. Your little one also deserves a mommy who appreciates her new-mom self.
