St. John's, FSU, Lady Vols, Zips all winners

Tennessee 67 - East Tennessee State 50

Rae Burrell scored 20 points and took three steals in 25 minutes to lead Tennessee (2-0) in victory over East Tennessee State.

The 6-1, forward and native of Las Vegas connected on seven-of-eleven shots, and knocked down two-of-four threes in her strong performance. Burrell kicked off the 2020-21 season with an 18-point effort over Western Kentucky.

Two other Lady Vols scored double figures as well. Senior guard Rennia Davis shot 6-10 and scored 15 points with four boards. Sophomore guard Jordan Horston posted 12 points, with five steals and three assists. Tennessee was led in rebounds by freshman Marta Suarez. The 6-2 forward had eight boards as well as one steal.

East Tennessee forced Tennessee to 24 turnovers, while turning over the ball over 22 times itself. The Buccaneers fell short on the shooting side, making 18-of-56 attempts for 32 percent. Tennessee made 43 percent of its shots. Freshman center Jakhia Davis led East Tennessee with 11 points and six rebounds. She shot 5-7.

Florida State 81 - Florida 75

Behind a double-double from Valencia Myers, host Florida State pinned Florida (1-1) down for a win in its season opener.

The 6-3 forward went to work with 14 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior guard Morgan Jones led Florida State in scoring. She scored 22 to go with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. It was a great day at the office for Jones who has a career scoring average of 5.6 points per game.

Guards Kourtney Weber and Bianca Jackson scored 14 apiece as well. They also combined for 10 rebounds. Florida got 20 points from sophomore Lavender Briggs, who averaged 14.8 points per game as a freshman. In the season opener the guard posted 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in a win over Grambling.

Fellow sophomore Nina Rickards had a strong offensive outing knocking down four-of-six threes on her way to 18 points, to go along with four steals and three assists.

Florida led 22-16 after the first quarter but poor free-throw shooting and a lack of rebounding spelled its doom. The Gators shot 8-16 at the free-throw line and was outrebounded 35-24.

Akron 70 - Northern Kentucky 60

After a 13-13 tie, Akron (2-0) outscored Northern Kentucky (0-2) 29-20 in the second quarter to take control of the game and earn its second win of the season.

Zips senior forward Jordyn Dawson scored 17 points and collected eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal as she kept the stat keepers busy during the game. Sophomore guard Rachel Martindale also had 17 points for Akron. She was a menace from three, shooting 5-8 from beyond the arc.

Akron freshman and hometown product, forward Lonasia Brewer scored 11 points to go along with five rebounds. Northern Kentucky lost the turnover battle 19-11 and were outshot from the field 44 percent to 36 percent. The top scorer for the Norse was sophomore guard Ivy Turner with 15 points. Senior forward Kailey Coffey almost had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. She also had three steals.

St. John's 85 - St. Peter's 47

St. John's dominated on both sides of the floor as it shot 54 percent from the floor in its second win of the season. Junior forward Rayven Peoples came off of the bench to shoot 10-13 and scored a game high 22 points. Peoples was the team's most productive player as she also grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five shots and posted two assists and a steal.

Leilani Correa proved to be a good distributor with five assists against one turnover. The 6-0 sophomore guard connected on nine-of-16 shots and scored 19 points with one steal and a block. Sophomore guard Unique Drake scored 16 points with four assists, four rebounds and three steals and junior guard Kadaja Bailey had 14 points and five rebounds.

On defense St. John's forced 20 turnovers and limited St. Peters to 18-of-80 shooting from the floor. That's right St. Peters got up 80 shots and only made 22 percent of them.
