Kentucky 70 - Belmont 50

Here's something wild. In the season opener against Murray State, Kentucky's (2-0) Dre'Una Edwards went 1-6 with two points and three fouls in six minutes of action. On November 29, she scored 27 points along with 15 rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of action against Belmont.

The 6-2 forward and Las Vegas native averaged 11.7 points per game during her freshman season at Utah in 2018-19. Against Belmont, Edwards exceeded expectations, shooting 11-19, including 2-4 from three. At Utah she'd only attempted one three-point shot which she missed. Senior forward KeKe McKinney also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

The third Wildcat that scored in double figures was Chasity Patterson who posted 10 points after scoring 30 in the season opener. Patterson, a 5-5 guard collected three steals which gives her a total of 11 for the season. Junior and 6-4 center Olivia Owens led the team with two blocks to go along with five points off of the bench.

While UK shot 44 percent overall, Belmont had a hard night making 28 percent of its shots. Its top scorer was Madison Treece who shot 5-13, with 14 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Destinee Wells collected a game best four steals, to go along with six points and four rebounds for Belmont.

Mississippi State 88 - Jackson State 58

Detroit native Rickea Jackson proved to be the motor to Mississippi State's offense with 19 points and four assists as she led her team to a win in its first game of the season.

The Bulldogs took a 40-19 lead into the half and didn't let up in the third quarter as it outscored Belmont 34-14. The Bulldogs lead got as big as 43 points (74-31) when Charlotte Kohl hit a free-throw with 22 seconds left in the quarter.

Jackson was a major player for Mississippi State as a freshman during the 2019-20 season. During the SEC tournament she averaged 20.3 points per game in three contests. On Sunday, she made three-of-six three-pointers and was also an effective rebounder with seven boards.

Mississippi State also got a productive effort from its duo of starting guards. Sophomore Jamya Mingo-Young had 13 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Myah Taylor, a senior, shot 3-4 from three to score 11 points, with seven assists and five rebounds. Jessika Carter a senior center also had a strong game with 14 points on 6-8 shooting to go along with a game high five blocks.

After a rough first three quarters Jackson State showed life in the fourth quarter as it outscored Mississippi State 25-14, which brought it within 30 points. Senior Dayzsha Rogan led Jackson State with 16 points as she knocked down three-of-six threes. Junior Jariyah Covington had a nice game for Jackson State with 12 points on 4-7 shooting.

Alabama 88 - Houston 66

Alabama (2-0) won the battle at the free-throw line knocking down 32-of-38 attempts opposed to Houston's 8-of-20 effort from the line in a twenty-two-point decision, on Sunday, in Tuscaloosa.

Guard Jorden Lewis and forward Jasmine Walker scored 25 and 22 points respectively. They didn't have the best shooting game from the field going a combined 14-34 overall and 4-14 from three, but the two players teamed up to go 14-17 from the free-throw line. The third leading scorer for Alabama was forward Ariyah Copeland who scored 18 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line. Copeland also took 14 rebounds away from Houston.

Houston was led in scoring by Julia Blackshell-Fair and Britney Onyeje who posted 12 points apiece. Daphnee White contributed nine points on four-of-five shooting to along with five rebounds and one block off of the bench.

Toledo 71 - Oakland 59

After trailing 35-30 at halftime, Toledo used an 18-6 third quarter to race past visiting Oakland behind Quinesha Lockett's 22 points in a season opening win.

Lockett shot 10-15 from the field and led the charge on defense as well with four steals and a block, not to mention her five rebounds. Toledo started four guards in its starting lineup and all of them ended the game in double figures. Sophmore Sophia Ward had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Senior Tatyana Davis and freshman Sammi Mikonowicz pitched in 10 points each. Mikonowicz had eight rebounds as well. Davis had a game high three blocks. As a team the Rockets recorded five blocks, while they're opponents were shutout in that category.

Oakland was led in scoring by sophomore guard Alona Blackwell. The 5-10 native of Grand Rapids, Michigan posted 22 points on 53 percent overall shooting.
